.4runner, by a lot.
For some reason I'm not surprised.. But, how often do you need to change the LBJ's on the 3rd gen? I'm guessing overall lower cost of maintenance outweighs the LBJ issue4runner, without question. I have both.
The LBJ issue is overblown. All it is comprises of is the lower ball joint in tensile forces (inverted ball joint), and over time if you drive on a worn ball joint long enough, it will shear. While I have never owned a 3rd gen or Taco, I've worked on them, and I have no issue owning one with that design. Just check your lbj regularly like every car.For some reason I'm not surprised.. I agree with @hickuptruck that the LBJ issue is overblown. Sure, it’s a $hitty design that, because of opposing forces, can cause the LBJ to wear or fail sooner than the typical Toyota LBJ design. However, most catastrophic failures occur because people don’t check them at the intervals that the damn Owners Manual says to inspect them and replace if necessary (inspect every 10k miles). I’ve owned my 3rd gen for 16 years and have replaced the LBJs 3 times, but it’s my primary work vehicle and is lifted, bigger tires, is in 4x4 more often than not, etc.The LBJ issue is overblown. I strongly disagree. The 5vz-Fe does not have the issues that the 3vze had. Tbh, the 5vz is basically the V6 counterpart to the 2uz in terms of reliability and longevity.Sure the 4r will be cheaper. Til the head gasket blows or trans takes a dump. Happens to them all.
But the 4th Gen is fuglyI'd splurge a little and get the 4th gen
I'd probably buy a cyber truck... so fugly doesn't phase me.But the 4th Gen is fugly![]()
