100 Series Landcruiser or 3rd gen 4Runner?

Which one has a cheaper cost of ownership?

Which one is better for someone on a budget who wants a daily driver and wants to occasionally go offroad?

Why?

I can't participate since I've never had to maintain a 3rd gen 4Runner. This may be common.

4Runner is cheaper. It cost half of what a LC did.

Never owned a 4Runner so for me a 4Runner is infinitely cheaper to maintain.

Dude...100 series is hella expensive for cost of ownership. Parts cost like 3-4x more. No aftermarket choices, or if you use aftermarket parts, you're doing the job again. My 100 series has cost me $3-4k a year in just parts, repair, and maintenance without labour.

Even mods, theres a Land Cruiser tax. That means all the mods are twice or 3x more expensive than a ubitiqous 4Runner.

I can't recommend a 100 series for anyone with a budget ever. These things are expensive to buy, and equally expensive to run and upkeep. The second you go cheap on a 100 series, it starts slowly getting worn and not running well over time.

For some reason I'm not surprised.. But, how often do you need to change the LBJ's on the 3rd gen? I'm guessing overall lower cost of maintenance outweighs the LBJ issue
The LBJ issue is overblown. All it is comprises of is the lower ball joint in tensile forces (inverted ball joint), and over time if you drive on a worn ball joint long enough, it will shear. While I have never owned a 3rd gen or Taco, I've worked on them, and I have no issue owning one with that design. Just check your lbj regularly like every car.

I always though said Land Cruiser tax more or less fell inline with the general MSRP tax law ....

I have a 100 and a 4th gen 4Runner and the 4Runner is much cheaper! Land Cruiser parts are a lot more. No regrats though

I agree with @hickuptruck that the LBJ issue is overblown. Sure, it’s a $hitty design that, because of opposing forces, can cause the LBJ to wear or fail sooner than the typical Toyota LBJ design. However, most catastrophic failures occur because people don’t check them at the intervals that the damn Owners Manual says to inspect them and replace if necessary (inspect every 10k miles). I’ve owned my 3rd gen for 16 years and have replaced the LBJs 3 times, but it’s my primary work vehicle and is lifted, bigger tires, is in 4x4 more often than not, etc.

Sure the 4r will be cheaper. Til the head gasket blows or trans takes a dump. Happens to them all.
I strongly disagree. The 5vz-Fe does not have the issues that the 3vze had. Tbh, the 5vz is basically the V6 counterpart to the 2uz in terms of reliability and longevity.

No brainer, if cheap is the game, the 4Runner will be cheaper.... get the 2.7L even. But personally, if 4Runner, I'd splurge a little and get the 4th gen because the 2UZ-FE engine is sweet.

3rd gen 3.4l 4runner’s are dope . 4wd 99 limited locked will get It done but they have a premium on them
