Found a low mileage 2006 in Florida. Sent deposit to them today. Pictures don't always reveal subtle blemishes and discolorations. Salesman sent me close up picture of discoloration on the plastic center console. Any idea what would have caused this, and what can be done to correct it short of replacing all the console parts?

I know, not a terribly interesting question, but nonetheless it is something I know is going to drive me nuts until it is corrected.

Pop it out, sand it and spray paint silver. That or find a stick-on trim set on eBay or somewhere. No need to buy an all new console.

The switches on the console look like they have the same pattern on them. Looks like the got sprayed with armor all or something and never wiped down. I would just use it as a bargaining chip and then see actually how bad it is once you get your hands on it.

Spend some time underwater maybe?

I certainly hope not. That's the only place where it appears to have the issue. Anyway to know whether it has been subject to flooding? Carfax does not indicate anything like that.

It's at Lexus of Palm Beach if anyone is interested in seeing other pics.

That panel in my '06 looked like crap too - but it looked like the P.O. just set a can of paint remover on it. It had a couple 3" rings - looked like if you set a cold beer on Grandma's dining room table without a coaster ;-)

The Toyota dealership was very cool (Toyota Mall of Georgia)... I asked the sales manager how much a replacement panel was. He said "Oh, I bet our body shop can paint - it'll look great. Let's get them to buff and wax the whole truck while it's back there" Very cools guys.

It's been 25,000 miles - set lots of mugs of coffee, washed it, etc. Looks like new:

Thanks Manhattan. The thought that maybe it was submerged (previous post) was completely freaking me out. Was thinking of pulling the plug on the deal. Wish the Lexus dealership was being that understand about it all.

Do you remember how much trouble it was to pull the panel?

Sorry, I was trying to be helpful not freak you out. Just something to be aware of with the recent events on the East Coast. It kinda looked to me like it may have sat underwater but it's hard to tell from the pick.

Not sure how you would determine exactly if that is the case. Just because it is for sale from a dealer doesn't mean they are trustworthy. Ask me how I know.

Anyway good luck. I'm on my way to Seattle to look at 3 06's on Sat.

Oh pulling the panel is easy. You pretty much just pull up on it till it pops out IIRC.

Ya know... if the dealership's not budging on the price, or willing to replace/repaint the panel... I wouldn't hesitate to rattle can it. Seriously. That panel is not bordered by anything in the same color - you really don't have to match it exactly - or at all. But, finding the exact color is easy too.

The grille on my '06 was looking pretty bad - apparently the previous owner stalked sand trucks? So, I painted it.

Thanks to all for the advice. Still moving forward with it. Dealer agreed to help by dropping price $250. Probably will try paint first as has been suggested. Worst case, may have to live with it for awhile and figure replacement in with other things I will want to do.

Really looking forward to having another Land Cruiser.

Thanks again!

Looks good - mine has the same problem. Mind if I ask what paint you used?

Good prep work on the grill paint renovation, but had to mention there are just 3 screws on top and two clips on the bottom(one minute job) holding the grill on! Painting the door trim plastic was a bit labor intensive with tape and paper- Would recommend just removing grill.

I found stick on faux wood replacement trim that was a 95% match side by side with 12 year OEM console trim on EBay. It would be worth a look. I believe I spent around $130 or so.

That said I would also consider the other posters and rattle can it too.

Either way you have some cost effective solutions to choose from.

FYI, rattle can paint these days is a great match with a little prep work. I ordered matching exterior paint last spring to do my door molding and its an almost dead match.

It's been a while since I did the grille... but I remember the decision to leave it in - I think the tape line was still necessary, e.g. the break in color was not where the grille came out. I'll have to look in the morning ;-)

Looks good, I have to do that when the weather warms up...interesting, you didn't remove the grill. It's 3 screws and 2 clips, literally takes 2 minutes to take off.

edit: crap, just saw someone else already posted that...
