So my 1989 4Runner (3VZE, manual trans) is running pretty well, but when I first start it, the temp gauge reads regular operating temperature. Sometimes it will drop to cold, then as the engine warms, it reads like it should. Today I took it out and temps stayed reading in the normal range from cold start, for the whole 20 min drive, and never dropped to indicate cold. I'm confused. What could be causing this? Faulty ECT sender? Has anyone run into this issue before.
The truck runs well, except for I am still getting a lot more gas smell from the exhaust even when the engine is warm that I think I should. I also got code 71 (EGR malfuction), but I tested the EGR system with my vacuum gauge and it checked out fine. Not sure if that is related.
