My water pump went out and apparently I got my 1HDT too hot because there looks like coolant in the oil. There is no bubbles in my coolant when the radiator cap is off, but when I check the oil while the engine is running the level is twice the lvl on the dipstick compared to when it’s not running.

What would be the best way forward?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, what a kick to the balls.

You cannot check the level of oil in an engine whilst its running.

Stop the engine, pull the dipstick, wipe/replace, pull the stick again - read value.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes i realise you are suppose to check the oil while the engine isn’t running. For some reason i checked the oil while it was running this time. I noticed a few bubbles on the oil dipstick and there was oil 1/3 the way up the dipstick. I am just concerned I over heated the engine.

Is there a way to test for coolant in the oil?

Thanks again for the responses/future responses.

Cheers!!!

How do you know your water pump went out and how long/hot did it get?

Coolant and oil looks milky when mixed. That's usually the sign of a head gasket leak. Do you have any other signs of overheating or head problems?

Coolant was leaking out from the water pump. Pulled it apart and water pump went out, so i replaced water pump/timing belt.

There is no bubbling in the coolant while the radiator cap is off. I never noticed in the temperature gauge that it got hot, but I might of missed it.

I’m not 100 percent sure coolant is getting into the oil. I let it idle till the engine got to operating temperature. I the oil doesn’t appear to have a milky look to it but only ran a few minutes after repair.

Looking for a business that tests oil will be my first check before I get too out of hand.

Much appreciate your response/help with this matter.

Cheers 🍻

blackstone oil analysis will give a definitive answer Standard Oil Analysis | Blackstone Laboratories - https://www.blackstone-labs.com/tests/standard-analysis/. if your getting oil in the coolant it could also be from the oil cooler, do you have chocolate milk shake in the oil thats a pretty good indicator that theres coolant in the oil
Thank you for your response to this matter.

I will look at that link about having my oil tested to be sure.

A few things to note..
  • If your radiator level is not having to be continuously topped up then there's no concerns about coolant making its way into oil
  • If your radiator level is dropping then:
    • It might be an external leak (water pump for example)
    • It might be going out the exhaust pipe after making its way into your combustion chamber
    • It might be going into the crankcase and mixing with oil
Opening up the oil cap and looking for a sludgy, greasy/whitish mess on the bottom side of the cap and inside the rocker cover (finger in and upwards).

I have re-read your posts in this thread and I think you're probably just a bit nervous and panicky after a repair with no good reason for that.

Pretty much.

I got it all back together and monitoring oil level and milky color, also monitoring the coolant level.

Ran it for about an hour today running errands and all looks good so far. Hoping/praying for the best.

Again, very grateful and appreciate the help with this matter.

Cheers

This is an update.

I want to thank the people that responded to my post. It’s awesome to have LC people to lean on.

Took the 93 on a road trip and she seems all good. What a relief. But in thinking that I had a problem lead me to find Scott Rowles - Legendary Toyota 4x4s. Been wanting to update turbo and get an intercooler for the 1HDT since I moved back from New Zealand. He seems very knowledgeable on the diesel Land Cruisers.

I will keep you posted on the ongoing upgrades.

Much appreciated all the support from this site.

🍻
