I installed a 60 series mid 80s dizzy and ignition into my 8/1973 FJ40 with an F motor. It runs pretty good with the timing set at TDC, but the vacuum ports on the dizzy and the carb are closed because the carb is vacuum retard and the dizzy is vacuum advance.

There was the kit from SOR that you can replace the carb's base from the 1F with the carb base from a vacuum advance 2F carb. It is no longer available from SOR

Can I find a regular 2f mid 80s carb and remove the base on it and replace that with the base on my 1F carb or is there more to it? If I can do it myself I would like to learn how to do it other wise I have a few options through known Cruiser gods that can convert my carb for me Or is there still a source to buy a "kit"

Tech instructions would be great.

carb

I dont know the answer but I bet JimC could tell you
fj40jim

he is the carb guy!:) He rebuilds and modifies the carbs

Mark from Mark's Offroad too. I would like to know the process and if a shade tree mechanic can do it too.

Dan, if you can find a '74 carb(maybe other years as well) from a FJ55, seems many of them had the ported vacuum. That's what I currently run on my 2F with the big cap FJ60 diz.
Drilling your base with any sort of predictable success requires a jig. I think Mark A has one and Jim C, too. Many a throttle base has been ruined by trying it.:frown:

The distributer in my bone stock 2F 1978 is a vacuum retard distributer too. Is there a direct swap vacuum advance distributer available from another model? I presently have the vaccum line plugged so it wont retard itself.

1977-newer should have been vacuum advance, not vacuum retard. Which side of the vacuum diaphram does your vacuum hose hookup to???

California spec was still vacuum retard, at least through '78 model year. I don't know about later than '78 model year.

There are Federal spec electronic distributors that are vacuum advance and the 60-series large cap distributors for 2F are vacuum advance. They are available frequently on EBay.

Hijacking back the thread...

Looks like Mark will be getting a call from me. I will have to wait until the winter when I don't plan on driving so the carb can be switched over. Oh Mark, Mark . . . are you reading this . . .how long would you need the carb to port it for a vacuum adavance?

Ed, I'll keep my eyes out for a FJ55 carb. Thanks for the info.

I could bring a ported '73 base to SNT for a field swap out.;) I did exactly that for portugue joe last year. You know, the pig guy [the grilling kind!]

If you're interested, best to give me a head's up at the shop. My pile of MUDship parts for SNT is growing daily.

Best

I'll call you today. Ed (Degnol) has a core I can also use if needed.

Maybe I'm missing something again...but, you capped the vacuum port at the base of the carb because it's a vacuum retard carb? What happens if you do put a vacuum line from that port to the dizzy? I thought a vacuum port was a vacuum port and the carb doesn't care what the dizzy does with it.

The 78 cal spec dissy will be fully electronic (no points). The vac canister has 2 vac fittings. Outer fitting is advance, inner fitting is retard.

Thanks for the reply. On the vacuum diaphram, attached to the distributer, there is only one nipple to attach the vacuum line. I disconnected the vacuum hose at the emissions control box mounted on the left side of the engine compartment. My distributer has a small clear plastic dustcover in it above where the "points" would be if that helps ID it.

Thanks,

Good talking to you Mark and thanks for working out the part for me. See you at surf n turf and I'll have some cold frosties with you.

Please keep this post going.

FJ40 Jim, I would be interested to hear how you would hook up the dual ported advanced 60 dizzy to a singl port retard dizzy.

I will also post the change to the way my rig runs after I hook up with Mark. My Cruiser runs pretty good now and I can't wait to see how it imporves with Mark's part.
