Hi everyone,

I had an LX570, looking at getting one again. I don't mind high miles - but concerned with one that I found...

I found a very clean 2014 LX570 with 192k miles, and all maintenance done at Monterey Lexus. However - the last few entries from Lexus maintenance show items listed below - these concern me.

Does anyone have insight into the level of risk? Perhaps risk of engine, valves, head gasket, etc.?

Here is the LX570 for sale: https://www.legacymotorscorp.com/details/used-2014-lexus-lx-570/93722676

There have been a handful of folks that have had valve spring issues at higher mileage, which had eerily similar symptoms before the spring fully broke and dropped a valve. But that’s only one potential issue. I’d pass unless you can fully diagnose it before purchase.

You can’t accidentally out these in 4wd because they are all wheel drive. And you have to be stopped and in neutral to engage 4lo. Run way from this one.

I say move on to the next if you worry that much, for the most part I think it just needs a good maintenance on stuff that wears out due to age and mileage.

It does sound like a big headache in the least. Unless the price is low enough to justify the risk I would look for something in far better shape.

thanks for the advice everyone. I was leaning towards going to check it out and see if it ran smooth, hook up an OBD2 and get codes... and insisting on a full inspection at my local Lexus, but now I'm leaning towards skipping on it, and being patient.

Thanks everyone - great advice.

Offer $20K and embrace a potential project. 😊 It’s going to be hard to sell to anyone reading the carfax history. I would think they will have to come down a lot or provide warranty.

yeah good thought.. I talked with Matt at the dealer, seems like a good guy, but I also don't think they are exactly being forthright about the risk to potential buyers.. carfax is not as obvious as the "Lexus Drivers" website for the potential issues... I guess maybe someone will come along who doesn't have access to Lexus records or doesn't read the carfax carefully.

It seems to me like possibly a $10k issue - or possibly nothing or much less cost... but a high risk.

I think offering $20-25k strikes me as about right, to budget for big risk.

The dealer will sell that to an uninformed purchaser. Why would they take the money hit and sell it to you? Someone will come in who isn't willing to look up the Lexus records (I'm sure most would not). I'd just keep looking, don't waste your time. Just my two cents.

yeah, agree. It's unfortunate that someone, even who does get a carfax, will not know the risk they are taking.

Sounds like the valve spring issue that caused a 2014 to give up the ghost last year. Pass.

thanks for the link. Okay - I am sufficiently scared now - won't even contact these guys about this one again :)

Thanks everyone... you saved me at least some worry, and possibly a lot of money.

Adding a he vin number so just in case someone searches this thread will come up in a search.

So. . . Now all misfires are a soon to fail valve spring? Coil replaced, misfire gone. Seems pretty normal.

And if one really was sure there is a dead to rights link for this, why not just then replace the springs before the engine craters itself?

yeah, fair point, and I had the same thought. This dealer prefers not to give any warranty - I know California has a mandatory 2-day option to return the car - so, like you said, I could insist on that, and then go straight to my dealer, do a full inspection, and do preventative items like replacing the springs..

But I'm not 100% sure that is the problem, and another problem could exist that is also significant.

On the other hand, there is always the chance that the problem can be addressed, or found quickly, or there may be no problem at all at this point.. Hard to know, without having a very solid root cause diagnosed with certainty.

All in all, without that certainty, feels risky to me.

They’re asking $31,000 with those mileage and engine uncertainty? For a little more you can buy mine with less miles, modded up and none of the engine issues. This is crazy, shop around there’s gotta be better options out there
