Rust???

I don't know about this truck for sure but... everything up this way has rust.

To get rust free I'd be shopping down California way.

That said, I'd check it out and drive it home. Not towing another Fj40 on the highway though.

I drove my Chevy powered Fj40 from Victoria BC to Phoenix and back. Highway driving it not overly hard and demanding on the truck.:steer:

Hey, I'm from Aberdeen. It's possible that it doesn't have a ton of rust. If you can get the guys address, I'm on vacation until Monday, and could go check it out for you. Just let me know what issues or questions you are looking for and I'd be happy to drive my 40 over to take a look. Whether the guy is shooting straight with you or not is beside the point. I've never used my video camera to upload, but I could get some additional shots or vid and shoot it your way.

If you decide to pick it up, come by my place for some Sasquatch Pizza and Wings, and you'll be on your way.

However I can help. Let me know.

Buying a rig from east of the mountains or from CA isn't any garantee against rust. I bought my '71 that was originally a CA rig that had moved to Arizona and then bought and trailered to WA. I had to replace the rear sill and quarters, not to mention the hard top that has holes you can almost put your hand through.

Ask the seller long and hard about the rust and have one of the locals who offered stop by and give it a once over. Lots of good cruiser heads up here who would not steer you wrong (unless they wanted it for themselves ;)

No, there are no guarantees, rust never sleeps. I bought a a 40 that had lived in Chehalis all of it's life and has the usual rust but in incredibly good shape considering the climate. Prior to my ownership it was a daily driver for over 20 years.
Depends on who had it and how they treated it I'm sure.

Hey ruining, where's sasquatch pizza? Always up for a decent local pizza when I visit the coast.

Now that is Cruiser people looking out for each other. That is one of the reasons that I love my Cruiser so much. I would definatly take Ruining up on his offer. He might save you tons of time, money and aggrivation. It always helps to have a objective person look to give you a honest opinion anyway.

x2 on the aberdeen rust buckets, though this one may be different, plus there was some serious flooding around there a couple years back.

Nah, those floods were a little south of us. There are plenty of good, clean rigs here. I've been here my whole life. If it was in a garage, or under a car port most of its life, it's probably good.

New joint on Lincoln in Hoquiam. If you're going to the coast, you can't miss it. Great pizza and good wings!

I may go check this rig out, anyway. The guy's name sounds familiar. The guy I'm thinking about is in IT management, though. Hopefully not the same dude, or he's not shooting straight, to start with. Of course, management doesn't always mean he's good with computers.

Local

If someone local can check it out before you go there it would help.:D

The truck, trailer, and parts rig will be apx 11,000 lbs. I'd look for an alternative way to ship the parts vehicle it its even worth getting.

The seller of the rig in question claims to be a mechanic of 30 years in various fields. Currently out of work, most recently working in logging operations.

Having read everything here and sleeping on it and going over shippin costs etc... I've decided to just wait around here down south for something to come up. Time was a major issue for me this weekend as well, so even if I had decided to go up and get it, my entire plan depended on nothing going wrong or I'd be in serious kaibosh.

I really appreciate all the offers to help out and hey, be my guest and check it out if you want, I wouldn't be surprised if someone else wouldn't be interested in the purchase, but I'm no longer interested in THAT particlar cruiser as I said.

I've been hanging around mud for a year or so watching and waiting, and I've got to tell you, one of the reasons I want a 40 is because of you guys, haha. Cruiserheads are some of the coolest people I've met locally and over the net:clap:. Hopefully I'll join your ranks soon. In the meantime, I'll be around.

So the owner just called me and he sounds like he needs the money pretty bad and could be talked down a bit. I'd guess you could talk him down to a little over 5k for the 72 cruiser, his salvage cruiser which he claims has a rusted body but the parts are all good and the trailer. If anyone is interested; just thought I should pass the info along.

Kine,

I bought my 40 in NorCal and I'm in SoCal. I had it shipped from Berkeley to Pasadena for $300, which is less than it woulda cost me to rent a uhaul truck & trailer and in the neighborhood of how much it would have cost to drive it... and that's assuming nothing went wrong, which it probably would have.

To quote a co-worker, "Of course, if you were really [STRIKE]foolish[/STRIKE] brave, you’d head up there and spend a day working on it, then drive it down the next day." But as you can see, I decided against it. Too many unknowns, and things that could cause major damage that you'd catch easily in a local shakedown run.

It's something to keep in mind because even if you don't go for this one, the right one might still be far away.

Very well put. I'm sitting tight for the moment. Thank you .

If you're patient the right rig will come up.

In hind sight I probably should have passed on mine back in 1991 when I bought it. That said it's a cool truck now and I never want to part with it.

Best of luck,
John.

Took 4 years to find my 40. I can't count the number of 40's that I looked at and called about. I do love her but sometimes I wish that I had held out for a bj. Oh well after I finish with this one then maybe a bj can be added to the fleet.

I lucked out with mine; it was a family heirloom. My dad, mother, uncle, step-dad owned it since '78. Hopefully, my kids will get it when they get to be in their 30's. (Unless it stays here in the terrible Aberdeen weather!):p

Man that is so cool to have one passed down in the family. I can't imagine how attached you are to it. I am very attached to mine and I have only had it since 2004. My son is 16 and loves it but as you say he won't get it until I have another one or it is time to pass it on to him. Definatly not for sale unless somebody offers stupid $$$ for it. Whatever you do don't sell it, but keep it in the family. That just makes a 40 extra special in my book.
