Need some help. My 13 yr old son @Cowboy45 and I are rebuilding a 2H we are putting in an HJ45 (Old Landy, thread on Mud) We tore it down last weekend. Looks clean for 300K miles. Minor pitting in a conrod bearing and main bearing. Crankshaft looks amazing. Knowing we need to replace a couple of bearings, we thought we should replace all. Pennies on the dollar.

The engine block stamp shows “2222222” which per FSM indicates I have std #2 bearings for the crankshaft bearings. The individual crankshaft bearings did not have any marks on them even though FSM says it should. All we saw was some other #s.

All the conrod bearing caps were stamped #1. FSM does not indicate what this number means. I am assuming this means the conrod bearings are std #1.

Any thoughts to clarify main crankshaft bearing and conrod bearing numbers? Do we have this right?

I am about to place an order and need to know. Some pics.

Well going through something similar....I can tell you sometimes you get the wrong parts even when everyone says it should be the right parts. :) Through ALL my research here and through Australian companies/rebuilders they were telling me what size CAM bearings I needed. Well, I ended up getting 14B cam bearings for my 13BT and they fit perfect. :meh: Going off of the actual measurement.

Your best bet is going to be taking it to a machine shop and having them measure everything. Have you checked the crank at a machine shop as well? Mine "looked" really good, but the machinist said he would grind/polish the crank and I would need the next undersize crank bearing. My rebuild kit already had the crank bearings, but they weren't any good to me after the crank grind. Between this and the cam bearings I had a few weeks/month of parts finding/shipping waiting to get the right parts.

I would get the crank/cam checked to make sure they are in spec and measure them, then go ahead and order whatever main/con-rod/cam bearings that correctly fit. You should be able to find the measurements for the parts you are ordering.

Good luck!

Thanks. Good advice. Did do a plastigauge which showed to be within standard range. Forgot to mention that.

I think plasti-gauge are good for checking clearance and double checking work done, but if you are rebuilding all the way, I’d just have it done and it everything checked at machine shop with correct gauges.
Plasti gauge won’t tell you if the crank journals are out of round or if the crank is oval’d or bent/twisted.
