Confirming dash light behavior for April ‘73 FJ40

Hello,

Apologies if this is documented elsewhere. I’ve searched and haven’t found anything.

With the engine running and all of the lights off, should the dash lights in cluster be on or off?

For my relatively new to me ‘73, the dash lights are always on, other than when key is off.

My 69 dash lights are only on when light switch is pulled to either parking or headlights

On my 72 I think with the head light switch pulled out one click - its running lights and the instrument panel will come too. 2nd notch the head lights will come on, hi and low beam are the floor switch. If I rotate the headlight switch I can dim or brighten the instrument panel light - IIRC rotating the switch all the way to the left is a click which will turn off the instrument panel lights.

Dash light should come on with either pull of the light switch otherwise should be off. If they come on when the key turned on dash lights have wired t bypass the switch.

Got it. Thanks all. That’s what I thought. There is definitely some “custom wiring” that was done two POs ago.
