I was shortening the tube on the spare tire mount so it would fit through the Rock Warrior wheel.
In the process of cutting it I went through part of the chain link. Probably cut about half way into it.
How much will this compromise the strength of the chain?
I don't want the spare tire to drop down and bounce into someone's car.
Can that link be welded or is it a non issue for the weight of the tire even bouncing around on trails?

thanks for any advice.

Quick links shown are plenty strong enough to hold a spare tire:

Material: 304 Stainless Steel.
Size: 67x30mm / 2.63x1.18 inch
Working Load Limit: 400kg / 880 lbs
Diameter: M7- 7mm / 0.27 inch
Opening: 8mm / 0.31 inch

I was thinking they would have to be the same size as the chain links (1 1/8 x 5/8) which anything in that size that I can find probably wouldn't bear the weight.
But I guess if I cut more of the tube off, I can actually reach the eye of the rod and use a larger one like the ones shown above.
Tomorrow I'll see if the alignment shop has a welder and if not, I will probably go this route.

Thanks.

It probably isn't worth it for this but you can also probably either find a local welding/repair shop or, not necessary for this, a mobile welder that will come to you. Before I learned to weld I cut through part of a leaf spring perch getting u-bolts off on my FJ-62. Mobile welder drove right up, fired up the generate/stick on his flatbed, zipped it up and was off for ~$50.

Just buy new tire lift from 2016+. Fits Rock Warriors without modification.

I ended up cutting off that chain link, cutting more of the tube, then found a quick link at Home Depot that supports just under 1000. I had to drill out the eye on the rod going through the spring to get it to fit, but I think it should hold up fine.
Thanks for the ideas.

Thought I would update this. Although the quick link was rated for 900 lbs, it is not for overhead lifting. It will not support the weight of a wheel/tire combo.
This is what I found today when I dropped the spare tire down. I used red threadlock but it looks like it just stripped the threads right off. Not sure how long it has been this way but very glad my spare was still there.
I ended up bolting it to the chain. Hope that holds up better. Will have to check it more often.

Did you look into using a cold shut link to repair the chain?

A bolt is probably fine as long as it doesn't slip through the two links or comes unscrewed.

Did not know they existed.
The bolt attaches the chain to the eye of the holder. There are washers on both sides and it is a nyloc nut so hopefully it will hold. May add thread locker at some point.

Working through this spare fitment issue now and just looked into the new spare carrier, though it looks like the same part fits 2008-2021 (link below for reference). Is part # 5190060322 the right one to fit the smaller center bore wheel? Figured this would be my alternate plan if I muck up trimming the tube.

Yup, that's the one:
