Looks like the compression rings in the HJ60 are starting to go in a couple of pistons. Cold start has tons of white smoke for 60 secs, with rough idle. Once warm only a little black smoke under load. No oil consumption or poor perfromance. Smooth idle after running for a couple of minutes. Truck has new injectors, glow plugs, manual relay, etc. Further inspection of PCV valve also shows blow-by supporting compression ring theory. Should I replace the rings, rebuild, or what?
Can I drop the oil pan and crank, pull the pistons, and replace just the rings? This would seem easier than rebuild/pulling engne etc. Would I need to replace the crank bearings when I reassemable?
Thanks for the heads up. I would like to turbo this vehical and am planning on driving it to central america within the next six months. Engine has 491,000 on it and was "rebuild" by PO at 350,000.
I have the FSM and couple of good wrenches.
Thanks,
Winslow
