well, i do know of one person that stuck an abrasive blade on a angle grinder, when it grenaded it sent a piece into his foot ... i have seen the foot.

they have RPM ratings for a reason.

Hi All:

Yeah Wayne, I have a buddy that had a cut-off wheel on an angle grinder frag on him - took a chunk of the wheel in his face (ouch!!) That was what convinced me to always wear a full face shield! ;)

Regards,

Alan

same here, full face sheild and hearing protection. the older one gets and the worse the hearing the more they try and save what is left.
i force my helper to wear all the gear, if i catch him not wearing it every time he gets a day off with no pay.

I pretty much suit up now every time I turn on a grinder.....eyes, ears, hands, long sleeves, and a dust mask if I'm doing a lot of cuts.

They do make abrasive blades for "high speed saws". The gas powered hand held type for cutting structural steel, decking, and concrete. The max RPMs are around 6,700 compared to a regular chop saw wheel which is roughly 4700.

I have a couple off-road fabricators that are cutting axle tubes with the chop saw and the regular blades deflect and the cuts aren't square. They are testing out the high speed wheels so I'll post up with what they say.

I thought i would use my miter for steel as well, then I realized the rpm ARE different.

I tried a metal cutoff blade on my circular saw, way too slow and messy.

Decided to take a chance on a Harbor freight 14" metal cutoff. It works, nothing fancy, adjustments ARE rudimentary, but it us what it is. Git ut for $50 new with 25% off. Used it to cut some 1/8 flats to practice using my new welder. It worked well, not slow and didn't big at all. New, 3" square May prove different. But its rated to 4.5".

Yeah there are lots of combinations of saws, rpms, material types and blade types. There is a blade that will handle the high rpms on a mitre saw. The mitre saw is higher quality so the blade and material are mounted very ridgid with virtually no slop or play.

The blades are expensive too, about $250/ea. You have to be cutting in a commercial application to make it worth the money. Mostly union steel contractors with high labor rates and low tolerances for down time.
