I remember reading a thread here recently about oil migrating from the gearbox to the transfer box - or was it the other way round? Apparently this is a common problem.

I have a manual gearbox which works fine but after about half an hours driving it becomes increasingly difficult to shift into fith gear. I wondered whether the gearbox could be running low on oil so checked - it was infact overflowing. Since I filled it myself, I know it was right a couple of months ago - so the extra oil must have come from somewhere.

My questions are these..

Where might the extra oil have come from - the transfer box?

What could be the possible explanations for my 5th gear becoming harder to select - I presume it has something to do with the heating of oil/gearbox/transfer box -as it gets progressively worse over time.

What is the fix for the migrating oil problem? I recall it involved linking the filler plugs with hydraulic hose..? Did someone have a photo - if anyone has info on this I would be grateful -especially if you can recall the diameter of the oil plugs so I can buy the bits...

Thanks all. Cheers, Jim

Hi Jim,

The seal between the tranny and transfer can leak, causing the oil to be pumped from the transfer to the tranny. It's important to fix, as the transfer can get damaged w/out enough oil.

There is a repair kit on Man-A-Fre's website.

There are also some posts on here about homebrew fixes. I'm sure a patient search will get you the results you need.

By the way, while I know about this problem for the 4 speed, I don't know if it's the same for the H55. They are so similar, I assume it's the same problem, but assumptions can be dangerous...

Best Regards,

I can't even get my 60 into 5th gear with perfect fluid levels! Ooh that's right I only have a 4sp dammit.
