I have a mean green currently....the paint isn't so hot any longer. Is red bad as well? Dan mentioned white is the best color for Sun. How is the silver holding up on the LX450? I see about 3 LC's a year.

I have the "champagne" color which is of course the best color of the LXs and basically the best color of any 80 series:flipoff2:

<----- I am probably a bad example but my truck is garaged at night and during the day. Paint is absolutely perfect and when its detailed and machine waxed it looks brand spanking new :grinpimp:

ROOBY is not one of the best for clear to stay put after extended time in our sun.

Mine is OK, but see lots peeling, as well as the dark green.

Dont know if you guys got ROOBy's color over there.

I like my red...but at the Toyota Dealer it is put in the color box as "metallic red", which would explain the problem with both the green and the red, as they are both somewhat "metallic", as are some of the others, like the "champagne" and "silver".

it would make sense that white will wear better than other colors.

i bet the dark, flat gray would last pretty well, too.

the blue would probably show the sun fading pretty quick.

thoughts on black?

I had a 93 green and the entire top, hood and fenders had to be repainted. I lived on Maui at the time and got over 250+ days of sun a year.
I now have a white 95 with original paint and it looks brand new, it came from NY but I live in Charleston SC now and its doing fine.

There is a big difference in heat when the car sits in the sun. The green was almost too hot to touch and the interior got blazing hot. The white only gets warm to the touch in full summer sun and the interior is much cooler.

very interesting.

I have grey (moonglow pearl) and the paint is doing quite well. Recommend this color if you can find it.

ive seen a lot of reds and greens as well failing, however the clear on my moonglow is failing on all fender flares and one spot on the hood. :( i didnt think the toyota white even had a clear coat, hence it doesnt fail .

You may be right on that, I do wax it and the top has some chalking similar to how a boats gelcoat chalks over time from sun exposure.

I think it is sunny here about 350 days a year........ Looks like the next one will be white.:hhmm: Always wanted to pick up a moonglow, or the maroon..... oh well.

Dark green 94, lived outside its entire life in sunny San Diego..

The paint started to go at about 9 years, looked bad enough to repaint it at 11 years.

Clearcoat is all gone on my hood, and mostly worn off of the roof. Also about 1/4 of the way down the front fenders.

i know for sure the green likes to fail. Here's a before and after pic.

I think comparing the LX to the Cruiser in this particular category is apples/oranges, as Lexus uses something like six plus coats of paint/clearcoat. Our LX looks markedly better than our TLC, even though the Cruiser's paint is in remarkable condition for its age.

BTW, the Cruiser is Nightshade pearl, and has no clear-coat fading at 12 years old. It spent it's first seven years in Seattle, and it's been in sunny south Idaho since 2003. It was owned by a doctor prior to us, and the leather is in fantastic shape as well, so I assume it was kept garaged. We garage it as well.

The LX on the other hand, exhibits all the signs of not having been garaged, as the leather is quite sun faded, yet the paint, somehow, still looks fantastic... even WITH the Idaho pinstripes.:D

the 40th pearl sage seems to hold up pretty well.

Not sure if there is a huge difference between the TLC and LX but i do own a LX (champagne) and the clear coat is peeling pretty badly all around the truck. I'll just have to continue wheeling it hard before breaking down and finally getting the paint job (this would most likely be due to the ball and chain's constant nagging about how ugly the truck is :))

You are asking a tough question. I would bet money that the hood in post 15 is not the factory paint job. I had a dark green one for a couple months that was very rough and had been outside for years but didn't show any paint failure. I also owned a dark green nissan pathfinder and dark green nissan truck. Both had never been inside a garage for over 10 years. The only place the paint failed on either of these two rigs was where the truck was repainted after a fender bender. Looked just like the hood pictured in #15 after 5 years.

I think most clear coat issues are re-paints other than some american rigs i have seen.

That being said the paint on both my cruisers and my audi is great. Silver audi, Champagne 100, and that odd light tan on the LX.
