I've finally put down the hammer and saw (and mouse) long enough to have done some exploring around here.

Iron Chest today, and last weekend Hancock Pass and the Alpine Tunnel.

First, a question: what trails did you guys do last year?

Hancock was very scenic, lots of history and mild wheeling, suitable for stock rigs.
Iron Chest was very scenic, lots of history and hard wheeling, not suitable for stock rigs.
In fact some of the hardest wheeling I'd care to take my station wagon on.

A portion of the trail requires constant spotting, lasting perhaps for a half mile and even with a competent spotter I ended up with some body damage. Great fun nevertheless.
And a fabulous destination. Google "Iron Chest trial" for info.

Upshot: There is much potential in the Saint Elmo area (an hour from Salida) for scenic and history laden trips with high alpine camping and fishing with some serious wheeling as an option.

If anyone is looking for an alternative to the San Juans let's set a date.

We did Grizzly lake one day. I am not sure where we camped but was nice.

I spent the first two days exploring the underside of my hood while replacing an air pump and P.S. pump. The third day took us up towards what I think was the Alpine Tunnel or Hancock Pass - they both sound familiar. We drove by a cabin (Allie Belle I think) that is precariously perched (sliding) down a hillside. We scrubbed that mission to help Shawn out of his trouble. But the rescue mission still afforded us some good experiences and we tooled around some old mine sites.

I'm coming to Salida 8/16-18 and maybe 19. My buddies father in law lives up there and the plan was to do some fishing.

I'll touch base with him to see what he's in for and get back to you if he's up for some exploring.

I grew up on the other side of the continental divide from Salida in a town called Sargents right on highway 50. If you are going to Salida you gotta stop by classic cruisers. Amazing Land Cruiser salvage yard.

They saved my arse last year with a PS Pump and Air Pump to replace the ones that failed while I was on my way up for the summer camping trip. They even opened the shop for me on a Saturday when they are normally closed to sell me the air pump. And they let you just walk through their yard to see all the cool stuff they have available.

You grew up in Sargents? How did that come about?
A tiny railroad stop on the back side of Marshall Pass on the D&RG Gunnison branch. Now just a general store and wrecking yard for the trucks that crash on Monarch Pass.
