I've finally put down the hammer and saw (and mouse) long enough to have done some exploring around here.
Iron Chest today, and last weekend Hancock Pass and the Alpine Tunnel.
First, a question: what trails did you guys do last year?
Hancock was very scenic, lots of history and mild wheeling, suitable for stock rigs.
Iron Chest was very scenic, lots of history and hard wheeling, not suitable for stock rigs.
In fact some of the hardest wheeling I'd care to take my station wagon on.
A portion of the trail requires constant spotting, lasting perhaps for a half mile and even with a competent spotter I ended up with some body damage. Great fun nevertheless.
And a fabulous destination. Google "Iron Chest trial" for info.
Upshot: There is much potential in the Saint Elmo area (an hour from Salida) for scenic and history laden trips with high alpine camping and fishing with some serious wheeling as an option.
If anyone is looking for an alternative to the San Juans let's set a date.
