I am sure a lot of you have done a trip or two up to Colorado. Obviously is not the best time of year, but thinking of spring/summer 2021. What are some trails and camping spots would you recommend?

Spring usually no, lots still closed. Summer months or what you consider summer mths, depends on winter type. Now is late, but could be very enjoyable, based on weather. No people, great deals, last minute stuff, as winter is getting there quickly, but lot of biz closed.

I can't make it now. The LC is going into Scott Higgins for some work shortly.

But I do plan on doing some shakedown runs with the LC prior to the trip.

Hopefully, that snow has helped the firefighters with the forest fires. I plan on doing this trip in the summer of 2021. But seeing snow would be awesome especially on the passes.

Has anyone done any of all the popular passes? Were you running stock gears in the 3rds or were you re-geared?

I had a wonderful time camping in Rico for the inaugural Pig Party. So many trails to choose from. Telluride was close and the little town of Rico itself has gas, groceries and booze while still achieving great amounts of solitude.

Stock gears are fine. The majority of the passes can be run in any stock Toyota 4x4 in low range, know how to properly use the equipment and you should not have any problems.
If your goal of the trip is to visit the high mountain passes, plan after mid July to be safe. Each year is different depending on snowpack in terms of access. Sometimes they open up much earlier and sometimes later.

Id suggest avoiding weekends or starting very early in the day. Now days the trails are swamped with UTVs.

Scott, give me a call and I can give you my opinion on the San Juans.

As for snow last year it snowed above Telluride in August. Normally Denver sees a dusting the first week of September.

Stock gears 35's and 2nd gear early and you will be fine.

Lizard Head Pass campground is a very scenic and free campground along the 145 close to Telluride. It's between Rico and Telluride. You can always camp there on your way to Telluride. You can do Ophir Pass and then Black Bear Pass which bring you back to Telluride which then you can take Imogene Pass. There are good dispersed campsites at the end of Imogene.

Can you wait until the first week in Aug 2021? Solid axle summit is happening which is a rather large land cruiser event that takes place in Ouray and trust me it is worth it! This will be my third time attending and i would really like to convoy up there with cruiser folks from AZ. Had a plan to last year but it fell apart.

The picture with the red and blue 60s was one random bad ass camp spot we found out on imogene pass.
