My HJ60 refused to start without the aid of some cold start spray. I replaced the glow plugs which solved the problem............. for about 3 weeks. Once again it now refuses to fire when its been stood overnight. The engine turns over fine, it just won't fire! Once started using the spray it will continue to start first time for the rest of the day even if left for several hours. I've checked for continuity at the glow plugs which showed plugs are ok also checked fusable links and curcuit breaker as recommended in my manual, all ok. The one thing I did notice is that a small widget located behind the airbox makes a loud click every time you turn the ignition, could this be anything to do with the problem. Its made by Nippondenso and has the serial number 28610-57060. Can't find a ref for it in my manual. HELP!!

Also it occassionally refuses to shut down, its only done it a few times, I believe this is called over dieseling and from reading previous thrreads it seems to be a common HJ problem. Previous threads have suggested the fuel cut off valve may be at fault. How do you check it?

Cheers

Hi,

Reviving an old post here but I was wondering if anyone has any solutionto this issue?

My car won't start at sub zero ambient without easy start. As per OP, the glow plugs have recently been replaced.

Nick.

Turned out that my glow plugs had failed due to the ones fitted to my car a couple of years ago being the wrong type (12V ones, my car is 24V). So fitted so NGK Y-197R and these seem to have solved the issue!

Hi Nick.

Beautiful truck. Nice score. In case you weren't aware there is a diesel specific sub-forum here where you'll likely get a quicker answer there in the future.

Hard cold starting can be due to several things. Bad glow plugs will definitely make things harder. There's lots of other things that contribute such as injector health, injection timing, compression, etc.

Glad you got it sorted. Just out of curiosity what is the price of diesel over there?

Hi Eric,

Thanks for the positive comments and the pointing out the Diesel sub-section. I didn't even noticed that was one. Looks like another few evenings will be used to go through this section. I am mostly on the UK Forum TBH where most 60-series on thee are diesels.

The cold start was quickly attributed to the glow plugs after failing to get any continuity in them. Both relays were tested and looked fine. I had no issue starting the truck on part-warm condition so I kinda put 2 and 2 together and went for the plugs. :-)

Price varies for a HJ60 in the UK, when I was looking at buying mine last month, road worthy ones were ranging from £4500 to just under £10,000 with even a few delusionals trying to sell them for over £20,000. Obviously a HJ61 would be a bit more expensive as they are rare in the UK. I personally didn't see one for sell when I was looking.

I paid £6450 for mine, which some people on the UK forum may consider overpriced, and, to be fair they may be right. There is a bit of rust on the body but the chassis is solid and it came with nearly £5000 of work done over the last couple of years, including rear diff rebuild, new transfer box, near new tyres and brakes, new radiator and nearly new full Terrain tamers 2in lift suspension kit.

I am looking to get the rust sorted out over the summer, while bringing the service history up to date in the meantime.

Nick.
