coil springs on the rear?

I've been seeing more and more photos of the underside of other people's 60s, and I'm not seeing any coil springs (in addition to the leaf springs, of course) yet, I've got them under my rig. (and under all the road grim, they are bright red) - if these are aftermarket add-ons, if I get rid of them, will I get a softer ride? is this why the rear-end doesn't sag? Should I just not worry about it?

Any thoughts?

Those are coil-over-shocks, used to raise a sagging rear end. Gabriel makes them and yes they do stiffen the ride. I had them on my 40 when purchased from the PO and I got rid of them asap and the ride improved. I have seen actual coil setups on 60's, very kewl, but lots of fabbing to make it work.

Swanky- I'll take 'em if you're going to just throw them away!

I'd keep 'em if they were mine, yes they'll stiffen the ride up some, but if the shock is externally adjustable for dampening, then you can probobly soften the ride up some that way.

I bet those were pricey.

they are not real spendy, prolly $60 each new.

I would ditch them, IMOP the shock mounts are not made to carry any wieght of the body.........which is what they are doing.

That's kind of what I was thinking - it's got the same bbright red coils on the front, too. I've been staring at this damn setup for the last two years - PO said nothing had ever really been done to it, but I'm guessing he bought it this way too.

If those things are holding up my rear end, I'm keepin 'em. I'll be needing new tires in the next year or so and I plan on going up to 32s - if that thing's dragging ass, I'll just go from bad to worse. If I could go to OME with a little lift, I'll loose them and let you know...but I can't make any mods because all of my time is being spent holding the damn thing together...

Which is why that bottom axle plate is showing a little twist...

hmmm...

To sag or not to sag...that is the question.

If you're just looking to fix a sag, get a nice 3" shackle kit, or even 2".

LP's right. Add another bloody leaf if you need to.

Keep an eye on that upper shock mount tube. The upper cross tube which those spring shocks are mounted. It's not the sturdies thing in the world. And it is prone to corrosion issues.

If it does bend and break it is fixable, just realize if this happens you will be cut'in-n-weld'in.

To keep or not to keep ? Just realize the consequences of either direction. A purist would probably replace with a stock shock and add a spring leaf. A geek would probably think about adding hydraulic slaves to see if one could get it to bounce.

It is sort of a backyard sag fix. I would lose them. Maybe look into an air bag suspension to help with sag but the only real solution is new springs.

2.5" shackles in the rear are pretty quick and inexpensive solution. They lift a little over an inch and worked well for me until I got new springs.
