Hello everyone.

I just had another coil pack fail on me, 3rd in the past few months. I know from reading all the awesome posts that it is super easy to replace. However, unlike so many members here, I have never done any repairs myself, and have a phobia of messing it up. I just refuse to pay $300+ again at the repair shop, for a job that I know is so simple.

I was wondering if any of the Austin area members have any time to come on by, and teach a newbie their expertise, haha. Please PM me if anyone is in the area, and wouldn't mind helping me out.

I will be doing it myself, either way. Just figured it was worth a message. Lunch/dinner would be on me. Thanks!!!

$300 for a coil pack? Man I'm in the wrong business!

It's a 8 minute job, the pack is $60 roughly. You need a 10mm socket, extension is good depending on which one you do. Disconnect the pack, undo the bolt, pull it out. Reverse install. If you can change your oil you can do this. Just don't do it with the engine running ;)

Aj is good people and can help if needed.

It's an easy-like-pie repair - you'll be amazed at how quickly it goes...

Haha. Well, the repair shop needs to "make sure it is, in fact that specific coil". That is $85 for an hour of "diagnosis". Then, they charge $120 for the part. Then another $85 for the install, and next thing you know it is $300+.

I have read all about it, and know it is a 5 min job. I've have watched videos, etc, but truly am afraid to go into the engine, as I never have. I'm sure once I do it once, I will be good to go, and get over my hesitancy, but figured a little help the first time would be worth it.

I look forward to meeting AJ, he sounds like a great guy.

Thanks Jackson! I'll reach out if I haven't gotten it done, by then.

Haha. I know I have to run the code to see which pack. Thanks Camino.

Anyone have a recommendation on a socket wrench kit? I think that is what I need to do the job, unless I'm wrong. Snap On seems good, but pricey. Do I need any other tools?

Yikes. For shade tree mechanics (you, me, and most non-pros) snap on or the like is way overkill. FWIW, my recommendation is to get help, as you're doing, and buy cheap tools first. Or ask your mentor(s) to bring their tools and pay attention to what is actually used. You'll quickly learn where it pays to spend money and where it's just a waste.
Here's a hint - Harbor Freight or XYZ generic is awesome for anything non-safety related. Get a cheapo metric socket set there, or wherever locally you can find one the cheapest.
Spend more money if/when you start buying things like jacks and jack stands where a failure could be catastrophic.

Awesome, thanks for the tool advice. Just had the code read, Cylinder 5 misfire. One step down, now off to the Auto store.

Here's the firing order for the engine:

Driver's side, third coil from the front. A little congested in that area, but should be easy enough. Get a decent set of metric sockets and get with someone and let them supervise you on how to do it.

In Scouts they use the EDGE method of teaching... That's kinda what you need to get your confidence up.

E - explain
D - demonstrate
G - guide
E - enable

Report back and let us know how it goes.

I'm no hot shot with a wrench, and I find these things easy to change. The worst part is getting the wire plug off the old pack.

AJ stopped by, car is running perfectly again. Picked up the Denso coil for $90, a decent set of ratchets for $40. Good to go.

AJ did pretty much all of the work, but I did watch, I should be good to go for the next time it happens. Thanks again to everyone on here, big help as always.

Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend!

Did this myself this Friday in the number 8 cylinder, little tricky to get to with the AC lines and the Air Box but simple nonetheless. Amazon had the Denso Coil for 55 (Prime) and Denso Iridium Power plug for 7 bucks.
