code 26 on 94 (1 Viewer)

I have been watching the symptoms for the past 3-4 weeks. I know the first obvious solution is to replace the oxygen sensor. But looking over a Haynes manual it could be several areas: fuel pressure reg., MAP sensor, EGR system, air intake system, EVAP system,etc,etc.
My symptoms are rough idle at 500-600rpms and hesitant acceleration from stop, I cant tell of any problems at cruising speeds. This symptom havent been consistant, some times the RPMs are smooth and it runs great and other times its rough and others its so rough its about to stall and the check engine light comes on. Next time I start up it runs fine and a couple minutes the light turns off.
I am also getting some rattling (my best guess at cat area) during accelerations right before changing gear.

At 140k my gut tells me to change out the oxygen sensor, but with several other options for this Code 26 how do I know its the Ox sensor?

Oxygen sensor codes are either 21 or 28.

CDan,

The diagnostic trouble codes show Code 26 being oxygen sensor or circuit and the dignosis is overly rich air/fuel ratio has been indicated by the sensor. Any ideas on what to look for first on the list of possible trouble areas? I am getting this info from Haynes, someone is using my FSM.

hmmm. I guess the first is to look at engine ground bolt and fuel pressure. I put on a fuel filter last year but maybe fuel pump - fuel pressure?? Not sure what the ECT is yet, dont even want to think about engine compression. I wish it is a oxygen sensor now.

Have the O2 sensors been replaced yet per the recall?

Not sure if they have, didnt even know there was a recall on them. I am the 3rd owner. The previous owner had all records but dont recall they were in his records of being replaced by need or by a recall. I am getting my FSM back to check into the ECT. My really question is what to look for first, any one have a Code 26?? What did you do??
