Ok so I got a used fuel tank that I want to clean up. Has very slight surface rust on one side.
What do you guys suggest for cleaning it and painting? I was thinking of wire wheel on grinder or sand paper?
Then rattle can it with a primer and paint? Is there rattle can clear coat? or is that overboard?
Is this a waste of time? Any suggestions on what to do or what type of paint?
All ideas appreciated

If its just the outside that needs work, I would just give it a sanding, primer and a coat of black hammerite. It's tuff stuff, and looks great.

I am looking for something I could find in the stores, I am in Canada so if anyone has some ideas?
I was thinking of using Rust Check rust killer for my primer then just coat it with some paint.
How about tremclad rust paint? that any good?

Stop worrying. Any of that is fine. Clear coat's purpose is to be shiny, no reason to do that for your fuel tank.

I wire wheeled my FJ40 fuel tank and painted it with rattle can Rustoleum Professional rust sealing primer and semigloss black. Looks great and is well protected.

Not worrying too much... just want it to look good among all the rust haha, and only want to do it once.
Thanks, yeah there is place here that has Zerorust on sale, so I will go with that I think.

Zerorust is an excellent product, I did some rust treatment with it on my FJ62 and it hadn't come back after three years when I sold the truck.

I armacoated my gas tank. the outside of it.

I am having mine acid washed and epoxy paint in the inside for $150.

thats a really good deal

I thought so.

fuel tank

I got the POR-15 tank cleaner/ sealer for the inside and regular POR-15 paint for the outside. In terms of prep for my tank, can I safely wire wheel/ sand it after I clean it out? I've heard that gas fumes can hide on there pretty good and blow up when you have any spark near them. The tank was drained and removed from my 55 nine months ago. What do y'all think?

Thanks,

Stu
