Are they replacing the yoke? You can check for binding very simply yourself. Support 'shine by the frame and let the rear axle drop to the maximum amount then - with everything safely blocked - crawl under and connect the drive shaft then slowly turn it by hand. If it starts to bind, you'll feel it.

Just in case you did not know, the DC type CV joint shafts typically do not have the as great an operating angle as single jointed shafts - contrary to popular belief. Careful grinding and clearancing can get you several more degrees of operating angle. The DC setup is primarily for reducing angular and torsional vibration in high speed drive shafts.

Dana Spicer used to have a really good technical section on their website called Dana Expert with a good calculator / simulator. A quick google search may turn up something.

Looks like you had a good time despite the equipment issues. I spotted Martin's (Birdman) 4RNR. How did the 4RNR work out? I know that he had a lot of issues to get squared away before the run.

All in all his truck worked really well. On Monday before the event he went out on on the trails and within 10 minutes (I believe) he blew a PS line because "someone" used a hose clamp to secure the high pressure line to the pump. Overnighted some parts from PSC and he was fixed up. The only other issue he had were some complications with the SKY parking brake kit. He was happy though.

Thanks buddy! Got your email too. Going to look through that manual pretty thoroughly tonight

Awesome pictures! Looked like a lot of fun! Thanks for posting - I enjoyed the gifs :)

Glad you enjoyed them! Picasa (google plus) does those gifs automatically when I take a burst of pictures with my phone. Pretty flipping slick if you ask me.

Chris is 100% correct about martin's breakage. The rear driveshaft issue with the SKY kit was that the bolts kept backing out. @dubsb had the same issues with the same kit, so fortunately he had the fix handy.

Martin is flipping awesome, isn't he? I got to drive his truck a little bit with the hand controls and I've gotta say, it's way easy to drive! Takes some getting used to, but hey, when you've got nothing but time

About one minute after this video ends is when I blew that rear yoke.

Looks like you had a great time and plenty of quality carnage. I'm impressed how Moonglow shattered that joint. I'm ultimately convinced there was a defect involved for it to happen...the driver.

Loose nut behind the wheel? Looks like fun Johhny...

Hell yeah man! People were asking where you were this year.

I took that blown yoke and driveshaft up to Oliver's Custom Driveshaft for owner Dave to assess, provide his opinion, and repair the driveshaft. He told me that he's seen a number of those AA yokes grenade on his customer's trucks recently. He's got an american made Spicer unit that is supposedly much better.

Oh absolutely :D

****, that would make sense too. It never occurred to me that binding would be possible. I suppose with a flexed out suspension and a little bit of axle wrap would point that driveshaft down far enough to get the CV to bind.

holy crap

The CV bind would be my first vote. A second "possible but not as likely" would involve a high enough torque being applied to the driveshaft to prevent the slip yolk from sliding. When suspension flexes the driveshaft produces compression or tension rather than slipping. Late model dirt track guys ran into this and went to a new ball and spline yolk to fix it. In your case I would suggest checking the yolk for burrs and using a nice moly assembly lube on the splines.

I had not even heard of this ball and spline yoke before. I will definitely need to take better care of my driveshafts

I don't have the driveshaft on-hand anymore to inspect. It's at Oliver's being worked. I will say that it was less than 5 days old, with less than 500 total miles, when the yoke yet, and the slip shaft was brand new.

Either way, we'll see what Dave @ Oliver's says about the destruction and whether or not the shaft was bound up!
