My passenger side rear wheel makes a “clunk” sound only when in reverse every full revolution either with the brakes applied or not. It will do it either in reverse or in neutral as long as the rig is moving backwards. Locking rear or center diffs don’t affect the sound. Going forward is no issue at all. Can the brake drum cause this?

Stock rig, 244k, and probably OEM and original internals for the drum.

Are you positive it is in the wheel? Could it be a u-joint in the drive shaft?

Not positive, but I know the sound is coming from that corner of the rig.

Will a u-joint make clunking sounds only in one direction?

dude,

slap the rig on four jack stands and drive it in reverse to see what's making the sound!!

That's my next plan of action. Good thing it's a nice long weekend.

My experience, yes, my front drive shaft had a bad u-joint that only made noise in reverse.

What drums? If it's the rig in your sig, you have rear discs. And you should definitely check the rear caliper bolts asap.

Correct, the rear are disks, but drums for the parking brake.

I'm going to guess and say one of the rear e brake shoes came loose or is hanging up. When I bought my truck one was missing the brake material all together....sure that made some noise for the PO

Also, if the sound is truly 1:1 with the wheel rotation, then not likely the drive shaft (since the shaft spins at a different speed than the wheels). But that may be hard to judge from the driver's seat.

A very important note! As i thought mine was in the wheel as well when the sound first developed.

Fixed. Parking brake belcrank was frozen. My parking brake has been "on" for the past few months. Explains why my mpgs were not so stellar. PB Blaster and a hammer was able to break it loose. Now I can coast a few hundred feet without slowing down. Also, lubed the driveshaft while the rig was up on jacks.
