They are GFRS, (commercial) and require a licence for use in the States, OK in Canada. I'm not sure how they can enforce this, just plead ignorance if you get caught in the U S and A.
GPS radios are pretty spendy...
These seem to be the best bang for the buck and have a lot of features, come with a car charger, NOAA and SOS compatable. From what I've read, the range on FRS/GFRS radios is solid at 2 miles and terrain dependant after that. (36miles is not very likely...)
