The wife is getting tired of beating the clothes on a rock down by the creek. It has not rained in awhile so the creek dried up. I understand it is time to buy a clothes washer. (Just kidding)

The wife bought a new Kenmoore in 1994. It lasted until 2006. I picked up a used/free Whirlpool washing machine from a neighbor who was moving in 2006. Now it is on the downhill side of a good life. When ever it decides, the final spin cycle does not work.

So anybody have any recomendations on a new one?

Kenmore use to be great- but not sure of reliability these days. Maytag has went downhill in the last 15 years and had issues with two. Currently I have an LG. trouble free in five years. It has a sanitize cycle and was the highest rated front loading when I bought it.

Front loader for sure, its not so hard on your clothes. Our whirlpools we bought new 7-8 years ago. They have been fine. Just use only the low e-soap and dont put in too much. Mike

Old 15-ish Maytag died 18 months ago; replaced with Kenmore HE top loader that was ranked #2 among top loaders by Consumer Reports. It removes soil more thoroughly than previous machine and has space for bulky items such as comforters due to not having a center post in the drum.

I have a 5 year old LG that works well, is quiet, and has had no problems. I would buy another.

We got a new Samsung front loader that has been really quite. It's upstairs and doesn't shake the house apart when it spins. We've had it about 6 months and it's been great.

We have abused our LG front loader and gas dryer since 2003. Both are still going strong.

 big time Dan ..

I did what Mike did about 10(?) years ago and bought a Whirlpool front loader on the advice of our repair guy...anyway seems a while now and with 2 young kids it gets a work-out. Been fine so far ...

also bought a gently used Miele - older model with the 220V water heater built in. After replacing a valve (fairly easy) it has been fine too but not as big as the Whirlpool. High speed spin on front loaders seem to get more water out and reduce drying time. Also less water is better if you're on a septic system. I find my clothes last longer as well fwiw.

If you want simple and tough an older Kenmore or Maytag top loader that has had little use is always a good buy I think. Not much luck with GE branded stuff for me though

We're on Whirlpool Duet Sport front-loader #2 and this one has been reliable for 4 years so far (knocking on wood). It's a warrantee replacement for the first one that lost its circuit board maybe a month after purchase.

I went thru this a couple of years ago and we ended getting whirlpool top loader. I founf out that maytag and whirlpool are the same just rebadged. We got the biggiest one they make and I can wash insulated carhart bibs, overalls and 2 jackets together. The front loader that held the same was 300 more and you would have to buy the stands and for wash and dryer they were 500. I work out of town and I have front loader whirlpools at my apartment and they are rough on clothes. I have to iron all my carhartt pants after they come out of the dryer

My Samsung has been a solid performer for three years now.

some good brands out there, maytag has made a turn around and is coming right back into the reliability its known for the past couple years. GE is always a good buy. samsung has been getting great reviews, just like LG. i am not partial but own LG and and would recommend.

the difference between front load and the new agitator less top loaders is irrelevant for performance and is strictly a personal choice.

Not sure if they've upgraded, but the kenmore front loaders are - or were - notorious for main bearing failure or tub support failures. The replacement cost is $350ish, so basically a throw the machine away problem. I believe a 10yr life is about what you should expect if they haven't improved the design.

I have a Frigidaire front loader that has been OK. Nothing special, just bought it on a whim one day because it was in the scratch and dent section with a matching dryer that had mismatched door color rings. $700 for both. Has had zero issues in 6 years. I'm not a huge frigidaire fan, but the price was right and I can't complain about functionality so far.

We have a Maytag Neptune front loader which has been trouble free since 2003.....

We have an old Hotpoint top loader that has been a trooper since the early 90's, only thing I've replaced was the water level switch. The family calls it the "40".

A few months ago a salesman at Lowes told me that Whirlpool owns most of the US brands, they're all made on the same lines with a lot of parts interchangeability, and the only real differences are between some of the foreign and traditionally US brands. I know when I was searching for a control board for a Whirlpool Duet dryer it turned out to be the exact same board as used in several different brands. Point is that some of the price differences between the US brands may only be in the label that's on it.

Just dumped our 22 month old maytag that was crap. Whirlpools are made with same parts according to service provider. Picked up a new top load samsung and it has been great so far. As mentioned previously it's quiet, cleans well and was on sale. I had Home Depot price match w/ Frys electronics and picked it up for 699. 200 off.
