cloth interior vs leather. Finally a leather kit that works!!

anyone know if there is a difference in the leather replacement kit designed to replace the cloth interior of a Landcruiser 95-97 and the leather replacement kit designed to replace the factory leather of a Landcruiser 95-97?

If you bought th eone designed to replace cloth would it fit if you were replacing factory leather?

I've got a 94 with cloth, and remember reading that the replacement seat covers are different for leather vs. cloth, reguardless of the replacement material. My 12 yr. old cloth still looks great, no rips, tears and wearing like iron.

The factory leather vs cloth seats are not at all the same. The only common attribute is the mounting points to the floorpan.

Cloth seats Vs. Leather

The BEST seats that they made, IMHO, were the cloth seats in the '92 FJ80s. They're comfortable, have a larger butt pan (important for some of us), slide back farther than the FZJ80 leathers AND, most important, fully recline.

I gave serious thought to parting out my wifes '92 FJ80 so I could have those seats redone in gray to put into my '96. Those and the grill that says 'TOYOTA' instead of the weird circle icon thingy. Oh, and the factory clock with alarm & timer... I wouldn't have been able to take the lower dash that allows a medium drive-thru drink in the forward cup holder instead of sunglasses... There were lots of amenities that were IMHO better on the FJ80s than the FZJ80s. I'd rather have seats that recline than electric seats myself.

I'd bet that guy that's coming to get your '92 wouldn't mind the leather seats from your '96, if you gave him some sort of discount.

Slave to fashion

What held me back on doing something like that was the cost and time delay of having them reupholstered to match my project truck. I have considered possibly buying a used drivers & passenger seat set from a bone yard and having them rebuilt to match right.

So, here goes my thought train on deciding to sell it instead of parting it out...

OK, so I pull the front seats, have them redone and sell the leathers out of my main TLC. I keep the TOYOTA grill and pull all the lights for spares. I can keep the transfer case & transmission as they're bolt in replacements... Sell the rims & tires and anything else that will unbolt. I figured with abotu 6 months of evenings and weekends I could get about $2000 for the parts I wasn't interested in keeping... So, I sold it for a bit more than that and don't have to loose the next 6 months of my life and have cash to buy the parts that I want/need now instead of storing boxes full of crap that I may break someday. Selling it running/working made the most sense.

Too many ideas. Not enough time.

Grench- the transmission from your '92 (A440F) is not a bolt-in replacement for the one in your '96 (A343F).

The '93-'94 FZJ80s have those same seats with better cloth and all the other stuff, plus were available with a FF, rear disks, and lockers. Best years for the 80 series in my opinion ...

OK. I stand corrected.

I believe a '92 (3FE) would have an A440, not the later A440F that went behind the 1FZE?

Ahh... OK. Then my economics were even more weighted toward selling it.

I had thought that the engine switch over was in '93 and that the trany switch over was in '95. My logic jump was that the two tranys had the same bolt pattern/function. Hate it when logic jumps.

you're almost there

there are three different transmissions

(91-92; 93-94; 95-97)

Hmm... The FAQ...

The FAQ must need an update then.

"
A343F = Automatic transmission used in LC's from 95-97

A442F = Automatic transmission used in LC's from 89?-94 AKA "the bus tranny", Also some diesels from 95-98
"

to summarize:

cloth and leather = different
93-97 leather = same
93-94 cloth and 95-97 cloth = different

when i looked into this group buy idea 2 years ago the aftermarket leather manufacturers did not have replacement kits for OEM leather on an 80 but they had conversion kits for OEM cloth seats. This is logical because most of their initial sales were to people converting to leather not replacing worn leather.

here is info from Katzkin.com
When I spoke to the sale person she claimed they Do carry the kit for a leather to leather replacement for 1995-1997. I asked to speak to a technician and he stated the same.

So, how much?

So, how much for the front seats? Are they color matched?

check their site for prices. I am very cautious as this leather kit thing seems to be a problem to find the right one. Has anyone successfully replaced their 1995-1997 OEM leather with a replacement kit?
I will call Katzkin tomorrow and see if I can speak with a designer to confirm.

At those prices, you might want to check with a local upholstery shop. You might be surprised what they can do.

i never went further than it says in the post. i was not confident that they were for leather-leather replacement because there is also a difference between cloth seats for those years and earlier.

if they can all confirm that it works (sales, tech, designers, etc...) I may take the plunge this weekend and order......
