Climate control turns off?

Hey all, hoping you can help me with my issue, which I think is related to the in cabin air filter. I recently replaced my air filter myself in my 2011 LC and had no issues. It wasn't, however, as simple as others reported (also a helpful video on carcarekiosk dot come) when I re-inserted the cartridge and filter, but it did 'snap' into place (or so I thought) and was working just fine for several weeks.

Then, about a week ago, I was following a heavy diesel truck and decided to enable the filter feature (which also worked great - no exhaust smell). Shortly after, I returned the climate system back to normal / auto mode and it was working just fine until yesterday.

Now, immediately upon starting my truck, there is a ridiculously loud clicking noise. This lasts for a few minutes then goes away.

I didn't suspect the air filter or related components at first, and thought it my be the GPS DVD player perhaps. But, removing the DVD didn't eliminate the noise.

The other thing I noticed when starting up - while the clicking is happening - the climate controls are disabled, and the interior temperature adjustments are not responding (nor is the top-line display panel showing the interior settings - only exterior temperature displays). I try to adjust the climate controls manually, but no response. I am also unable to toggle between fresh-air and recirculate during this time.

I have read on other forums that prior to the installation of the air filter, the climate system should be set to recirculate. I did not do this. (But, as stated before, everything had been working as expected.)

I'll tackle the glove box and disassemble it this weekend if you all think this is an easy fix, maybe a filter alignment issue? Has anyone experienced this, and do you know how to fix it easily (i.e. cheaply)?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm having the same issue with my '10 too. I have tried to reset the filter but it is still acting up. I'd love to hear a solution as well!

Well the tech would have to have the parts dept. in on his scam. It's not like he is going to be able to just hang out and not do any work. If caught up in doing something like that he would get fired. Not much work involved in draining and refilling the diff's and transfer case when it's on the rack. I did check the Zerts for fresh grease. When they did brake fluid new stuff was clear and resovoir was full. I would be more worried about a small indepent shop. A Lexus dealer has to much on the line for that kind of crap. What you are saying is possible maybe a one in 1000+ chance.

I really wish that were true, but it's not. Im telling you man, it happens. All. The. Time. I worked in a service department myself years ago and saw what goes on. A guy I know with a 70 series told me just last week he recently took it to a Toyota dealer for a brake job. They charged him $800. They literally didnt do a thing to it. As in, they didnt even remove the wheels! I'm dead serious. Anyway....

The owners manual tells you how to change the cabin filter. Just follow the instructions and remove and replace it again and see what happens. When I took a look at mine, it was just laying in there, not secured in the housing and my climate control was turning off. That was done by a tech at a dealership in FL.

@89cruiserfj62 thanks! It is working as expected now.

I repeated the filter installation steps I originally did when I replaced it a few weeks ago. This time, I did set it to recirculate to be safe, and while everything appeared to be normal, it did give me another chance to clear out a few more dust bunnies and give the fan a once over. But, I installed the filter and replaced everything and that did the trick. (not clear what has changed, but clearly something was out of alignment and now seems to be resolved)

I did, however, break the glove box shelf's plastic tabs in the process. Oh well. Clicking noise is officially gone, so overall I'm happy.

@drmwvr you may have luck with a quick re-install too - hope that helps you as well.
