I am in the process of installing a cdl switch on my 97 40th (hardest part was removing the bling fake wood trim cuz you can't get the switch through it, if the wife notices I'll get another earful!) I decided to move that little switch to "M". When I did that the led for the recirc button was disabled, even though I could hear the motor close and open the flapper thingie. So I had no way of knowing if I was recirculating or getting outside air. Deal killer for me so I switched it back to "A" even though it bugs the hell out of me having that thing in auto. I've tried using the "off" button but it still makes it own decisions. I'm thinking of naming it "HAL". When I was tinkering with the hidden switch I thought I heard it ask me "Dave, what are you doing?"

Anybody else have this problem after changing that switch? I still have the dash apart so I can tinker with it.

jon- to get it out of auto (with the switch still on "A"), do this:

1. Start off in auto
2. Manually select fan speed, recirc setting, vent select setting (If you choose to set only one (fan speed OR recirc) manually, the other one will still be set automatically)
3. As long as you set these things manually after choosing "Auto", they will stay on the manual setting, even after restart

AK C,
Thanks for the reply, I tried it and the rcirc and vent as well as the diverter valve (or whatever the thingie is that directs air to your feet, or dash, or defroster) will change selections if the temp slider is moved.

jon- what you are describing occasionally happens to me, and it is because the "Auto" button sometimes sticks in the "on" position. Make sure the LED on the "Auto" button turns from a vivid green to a lighter green to verify it has gone into manual mode (great choice of colors to differentiate the two modes, don't you think? ;) If it does not change color (and the color change is *slight*) then it is probably stuck, and you just need to push the "Auto" button a few times until it is unstuck, and then choose fan speed, recirc to get it in manual mode.

Especially since I am color "challenged" with certain greens. I have to lower my head down to the level of the led to see the change. Gonna have to remember to do this while in "park".
Thank you sir! You have successfully explained this in a way I could understand, no mean feat as I don't understand much of anything. :D I just tried it and it works. That is until I hit "defrost" and HAL takes over again, but I can live with that, the "foot/defrost" button still keeps it in manual.
Thanks again for the help .
