Hey all, looking for some advice on a new issue that popped up. 04 Lx, recently had front brakes (pads and rotors) wheel bearings, TREs done. I have a noise that is clicking every time I tap the brakes, it comes from front of the car. It is a rattle over bumps at low speeds also. But every time you tap the brakes it clicks. You don’t have press the brakes hard to get the click. Some times I get a click noise going straight if I start slow and the click noise progresses with speed up to about 25mph. If I hit the brakes, the clicking goes away. Kind of an off noise. No click in the axles if I make sharp turns. Click only going straight. I plan on taking the wheels off tomorrow to look for lose clips, pins ex. But not sure if anyone has anything specifically to investigate. Appreciate the info and advice on this one. It’s driving me nuts. Truck doesn’t feel bad in anyway, no hard braking, no rough riding, anything like that.
Thanks!

Check yer lug nuts.

Are you me!?!?!? I'm having the EXACT same problem on my 01'. It's driving me nuts. This started happening a month ago. About 3 months ago I also did all four brakes and rotors, front wheel bearings, sway bar bushings, stab bar bushings, and a new page cv axle. Everything was great for a while. The the clicking I pulled the tires off to check everything. Nothing I could find loose. Took it to Firestone and they couldn't figure it out either. I'm dropping my skid plate, pulling the wheels and brakes, checking the wheel bearings presets this Sunday. I don't know how the wheel bearings could cause that clicking sounds, but it's the only thing I haven't dug back into..

Just curious, what brand rotors and brakes did you do?

@Somebodyelse5 and I both had similar clicking on our 100s and it turned out to be a couple of loose lug nuts.

Toyota Rotors and akebono pads were used.

We’ll do I have good news for you. Not lug nuts. I took the pins out and greased them heavily with Mobil 1 red grease. Noise gone. Did both caliper pad pins and reinstalled. Zero noise now. No clicks, everything smooth. Hope you can do the same and fix that issue. Man was that annoying sounds.

No such luck for me. I pulled the front pads out this morning and replaced the guide pins. Still clicking. Still can't figure the issue out. It's sounds like it's on both sides too which is frustrating. I knew it wasn't he lug nuts cause that's what Firestone said it could've been, but didn't fix it. Oh well. Time to keep t/s'ing.

So taking the pins and greasing helped 75%, much quieter, the hardware kit was from NAPA when I did the brakes, the slings and pins. I’m wondering if I should replace with Mr T parts . Also the akebono brake pads were used, so not Toyota OEM. But over all the clicking is quieter after I mess with those pins, I have a feeling one component doesn’t like the other. Either those pads don’t like to slide on the pins or whatnot. It doesn’t seem to be any issue safety wise, it stops great, nothing loose. So who knows. Might pull the pins again and try brake pin grease see if that works better but there was a huge improvement after I messed with those.

Could the sound be from the caliper piston making contact with the back of the pad/shim?

This is what I think, it was really loud before like obnoxiously loud. Not normal. Just went for a ride, it’s a little cooler today and very wet. Zero clicking. So that’s a plus. Have to see if it comes back when it’s dry out. My only rattle noise left is the ebrake cable rattle noise. Super annoying but have to see if there’s an adjustment needed to take up some slack in the cable.

So, one of the Mr. T shim kits comes with a backing plate with two prongs which compression fit to the inside of the caliper ppiston. It is to prevent the caliper piston slap and helps react the brake pads from the rotor. I'm guessing you don't have these parts installed?

The Napa hardware kit came with the spring prong thing I believe you are talking about, it pushes the pads out, or is supposed to. I might not be as good as the mr T one I’m thinking. Is that the part you are talking about?

No, that is the anti-rattle clip

The Mr. T kit comes with 2 flat pieces and 2 other flat pieces that have two prongs on one side, and grease. The flat piece goes between the back of the brake pad and the flat side of the pronged piece, but the pronged piece gets installed first.

Hmmm… this might be what I’m lacking! Any chance you have a part number for this?

I've sourced all my brake parts from Toyota and Auto Parts Store/NAPA - The Toyota brake shim parts are stupid expensive and doesn't come in a complete kit. The hardware kit I've sourced from NAPA auto parts - comes with everything except for new caliper pins. I just did my brakes last week but reused all my parts and didn't open the kit I bought. I believe it was Toyota pads I used last time and those used a separate plastic shim between the metal plate and the brake pad, but the aftermarket pads came with this plastic plate stuck on the back of the pad (Akebono)

Toyota parts -
#0494560020 is the plates.
#9042006024 is the pins
#9046085131 is the plate clips
#4774860061 is the "M" spring
#9008046209 is the pin retainer clip

NAPA brake kit - UP83315A

This is awesome. Thank you for the info!

You can buy the complete kit from Mr. T. I did. It cost $60-70 with the discount for MUDDERS in the ABQ area at the local dealership. Well worth it in my opinion
