93 LC with factory lockers, 180k miles, bone stock...
Did the front axles a while back with parts from CDan and recently had the head gasket, tires, brakes, etc done at a local shop. As soon as I got the truck back I tried the lockers (for the first time in a long time) but they didn't engage. Tried light tapping with a small hammer on the rear end and did a lot of figure eights on a dirt road, but still nada. Then I noticed a clicking coming from the rear. Took it back to the shop thinking brakes. They said it was something in the rear end and recommended a Toyota specialist on the other side of town. Before I throw myself on their mercy I wanted to post here. I also looked in my FSM but couldn't find anything about the lockers (?).
I want to think something didn't fully engage, and now won't disengage, and is catching inside the rear end. Any suggestions? I really like the vehicle and look forward to driving it again, but not until I know wtf is making the click, click, click.....

What lights showed on the dash? Flashing, steady? Might be stuck 'half and half', try pressing the button on and off numerous times whilst on gravel, try forwards and backwards. With the ignition on but engine off you can normally hear them whirring as they engage/disengage.

regards

Dave

Yes, in low - put in N and pull back on the low gear shifter

Engine off, ignition on, I'm not hearing any whirling. Just tried again on dirt road turning switch off and on, forward and reverse, but only flashing lights. Looks like I'll be going across town next week to give it up to the Toyota shop. Thanks......

Does the CDL light come on? then the rear red blinks when you switch it on and doesn't engage? If so, could be 3 things in order of easy to hard:

the switch is dirty and needs cleaning, new one
the rear actuator was installed with the rear diff unlocked and its not making the full motion to lock
the rear actuator is caput, need new one or refurbished old one.

I have had the second and third happen to me.

You mentioned a clicking that the shop said may be in the rear end.. I assume you mean something is clicking while you drive the truck?

If so, does the clicking change depending on whether you are going straight or turning?
Does the clicking change with speed? does it seem like it is tied to the wheel RPM (slow) or driveline rpm (roughly 4x as fast)

If going straight, it shouldn't have anything to do with the locker, for the record.
