Hi crew.
New to the forum following my recent purchase of ‘05 V8 petrol auto Sahara.
I’ve had a look and search for a “how to” on cleaning throttle body, but can’t seem to find a walk through for this. Lots of people saying they’ve done it, but can’t see anything that steps you through the process.
Anyone able to assist with instructions or a link?
Cheers in advance.

I just watched general YouTube videos before I did mine, they weren't LC Vids, but the point gets across. I loosened mine the best I could and stuck cardboard between the TB and engine block so the spray didn't enter the block. I went through three tooth brushes and several rags. The MAF sensor was way easier, and I would recommend cleaning that as well.

Thanks mate. I’ll check YouTube and see how I go.

Super easy, Maf even easier, plenty of YouTube vids as ryanstl said

Going to do this.Any more tips.I need to take of the engine plastic cover right and clamps for intake hose and spray inside throttle body and outside not to much and wipe clean.Thanks.

If your throttle body is controlled by cable 98-02 USA; you can open butterfly by hand.
If throttle body controlled by wire (electronic) 03-07 USA; turn IG switch to on and depress gas peddle to open butterfly.

BG, CRC and others sell a spray can of cleaner for this. I've also used Sea Foam lubricant to wipe clean throttle body.

A note: One mud member years ago put out a warning to avoid getting solvent through wall of throttle body where axle of butterfly penetrates. Where his was on a 98-99 which was reported to have some issues with throttle body. He felt the solvent may have enter the motor gearing area and damage it.

I have a 2004 with electric throttle.

If a friend presses the gas pedal, do you stuff a rag behind the back plate to block over spray?

Is it safe to just remove the throttle body and manually open the plate? I don’t want to risk messing up the calibration

It's fine to have over spray go through the throttle body and into the intake manifold. It's actually can be a good thing. It's the same as using a fogger to clean carbon from heads. If you do remove throttle body, it best practice to replace gasket.

I've not "seen" stated, in the FSM or TIS training materiel, that opening the electronic throttle by hand is damaging. That said, it widely (all vehicles) believe it can damage the electronic. So out of abundance of caution, I have "My Little Friend" hold open. By holding down throttle pedal. I just need turn IG switch to on, and this opens butterfly in throttle body. Removing and opening by hand, may have the same risk as disconnecting battery and opening by hand, if there is any.

Meet my little friend, he's spring loaded. Formerly a shower curtain rod!

Haha nice. Does pressing the pedal open the plate a full 90 degrees?

If I am to remove the throttle body, how much coolant will I loose if I don’t clamp the hoses? Will I need to refill?

Drain off a gallon from radiator in a clean jug. Then you'll loose only drops. But still protect drive belt and pulley bearings from coolant spillage.

Finally cleaned the throttle body yesterday on my 2003 LC; while I was there also replaced spark plugs, cleaned airflow sensor and replaced air filter. Back to throttle body, I did not clamp the hoses or drained the coolant. I did get a coolant splash 💦, belt and engine were protected with towels, but not my face 😬. Once pulled the hoses off, turned them facing upward—no additional coolant leakage. I DARED TO REMOVE THE THROTTLE BODY, cleaned it up carefully, it was pretty dirty, especially in the back, here is the video if you decide to remove it (), the guy explains it pretty well. Once cleaned, replaced the gasket and bolted the throttle body back at 15lbs torque. Then, the moment of truth. Turned the key on and off, did that two times and waited for all the lights to die off and could hear the throttle body adjusting—recalibrating. Then, turned the key on and pushed gas all the way. And ONLY after those steps did I start the vehicle. No check engine light, started fine, the rpm was jumping slightly, but I gave it a good run on the streets and freeway 😀. Drove the vehicle today and wow-shifts and runs so smooth.

@2001LC thanks for all your info that floats around on these forums.
>> Any thoughts on removing the butterfly or would that be a risky maneuver ( drop a screw / strip something ) ? Was thinking it just be easier to clean all around the plate itself and inside TB.

I've never removed the butterfly on a 2UZ-fe. Never really felt the need. I suppose one could with care.
