Hey, I have a class ii hitch on my GMC savana van. From what I can find the hitch is rated for 3500lbs. I need to tow my fj80 to Roswell NM as I'll be there for the next 5 months. This class ii hitch looks to be built the same as a class iii, with the exception of the size of receiver. Would It be an un wise Idea to tow my 80 using this equipment, or should I up grade. Also, I will be using a tow dolly, so not much weight will be on the tongue.

Rating of 3500# is the trailered weight. Your 80's weight is much more, not worth the liability if you have problems.

Get a class III for the 80

I thought of getting a one way rental from Roswell, to Tucson. But it's a dollar a mile, and they don't have any available. I guess I could tow a rental from Tucson, drop off the 80 and drive the rental back. But most of the Idea was to try and keep some of the miles off.

Would it be cheaper to just replace the hitch on the van? Do It Yourself install should keep it under $200. John

No, because I have already bought the equipment to flat tow. I am already at $150 for that, now I need to fab some mounts. At that point it will cost the same to drive both out. That's fine, I wanted to keep the miles off. Maybe I'll borrow my dad's truck. Looking at the hitch, it is just as well built as a class iii, with the exception of the receiver size. I have no doubts it will be fine, but as phil noted, if anything happens, I'll be liable. Not really a risk I want to take.

I wouldn't tow either. To me that is too much weight to be towing without extra brakes. I really don't like the extra weight of my carhauler but having brakes on both axles make a huge difference when it comes to stopping. Either vehicle will push the back around on the other if you have to brake hard while turning. Besides the receiver hitch make sure the ball you use is rated for the weight you pulling. So far I've only found a 6,000# 2" ball. That's fine with a 40 series on my carhauler but might be pushing it if I would have to haul my FJ62.

No one has mentioned it but I'm sure you know to pull your rear drive on your full time 4WD 80 series if you tow it with a car dolly.
