I started looking into security alarms for the HDJ81 a few days ago, and came across a Clarion SR1000 alarm with remote start and turbo timer.

I don't have a turbo timer yet and thought that this might be a good solution. Does anyone have any expereince or advice about this or similar combination units in a diesel Cruiser?

I'm really warming up to the idea of the remote start too. ;) But to be effective, I'd have to set the hand throttle before shutting down (I usually set it at about 900 RPM according to the factory tach while warming up - how accurate are they anyways?) Would running the Cruiser at this slightly higher RPM affect the turbo timer function?

Unlike dedicated turbo timers, the stay-on duration is programmed by the installer and is not changeable by the driver. I'm thinking that 3 minutes would be a reasonable duration; what do you suggest?

Thanks, -Steve

You could probably fake out the ac idle up to run for a while on start up. That'd get you another 100 rpm or so.

I believe the consensus on the Turbo Diesel Register was that turbo timers are unnecessary with modern (ie post 1970) oil and turbo bearings but it is cool to walk away and leave the rig running.

I'd put the money toward a club and a Webasto.

I would not worry about a turbo timer. 3 minutes seems excessive. 30 seconds of idling should do it. iMOP only.... Thats only if you just came off the highway after heavy boosting(heat) normal town driving. Just idle for 10 seconds. Then kill it. Its the long boost duration on the highway that really gets it hot. So don't pull into the truck stop for gas and kill the motor to fast.

Just think, how old is your truck? did the previous owner baby it?? who knows? so anything you baby it for, has got to better. But if damage was done it was done.

Instead of a alarm I would put in a kill switch for sure and use the club. Since you just had someone trying to grab yur rig.....ouch scary.

On the note, I have a customer wanting the timer also, but if its not neccessary I would suggest not putting it in?

He lives in Boston, but I think it will be parked through the winters, but not sure, so the Webasto would be a better idea for him.
