just like the title says I am getting a single metallic clang or clunk when i shift out of D into park in 4 lo and on one occasion three clangs when accelerating just after shifting into drive. No noise at all in 4 hi. It almost sounds like a loud birfield clank except it happens when I am stopped and the wheels are pointed straight ahead and it sounds more centred. It does not seem to do it if I go from P to N and back but it will if I put it from park to drive and back to P even if I do not touch the throttle. Yes I am stationary with foot on brake. nothing happens to the dash lights when it does this. the cdl light comes on right away when I shift into 4-lo but is a little slower to disengage than it used to be. it is a 93 with an a442F in there and 140k. tranny fluid looks okay. any suggestions appreciated.

I would start with the low hanging fruit, check you U-joints for play, might only make noise in low because they are move heavily loaded

You could also get the CDL switch and do the pin 7 mod to see if it has something to do with the center locker (trying shifting in low with locked and unlocked) it is a nice mod anyway even if it does not help with your current problem

update. no play in ujoints. after more listening and experimentation it seems like I have to force the tranny into park a little in 4-lo and the clang is from somewhere right under the shifter. odd thing is no problems at all in 4 hi. it is like the shifter is loaded up a little too much in 4 lo so maybe the linkage is off. it looks simple to adjust the linkage but if anyone has done it Id appreciate any tips. I went to check the t-case fluid and cant break the nut free.

you know what the parking pawl sounds like correct? this is something else right?

This happened to me once when I did not have the center diff lever all the way to either L or H, I can't remember which. Moving the lever more firmly made it go away.
