It started this morning on my way home from work, really loud clackety clack from my transmission...U-joints look ok, I tried to wiggle and pry them, nothing obvious...

any ideas? I was running in 2 high, hubs locked... it's tied to vehicle speed not engine speed....

Fire away, any help would be appreciated... I have a 2 hour trip in 24 hours to a 'Cruiser meeting, that I don't want to miss...and i'm working for 12 of those hours, so I don't have much time...

are you sure it's comming from the transmission? Have you been wheeling lately? Could it be from the front end???? If you unlock your hubs does the noise go away?
Does the the noise stop with the clutch pushed in?

You need to post more info......

I just got back from a quick drive, I get the same noise regardless hubs locked/unlocked, regardless of in 2H/4H...

no wheeling, I drove it 3 hours out of town, 3 hours back last weekend, no problems, drove to work no problem,

It sounds like from the transfer case, but very little vibration in either shifter, but you can feel it there...definelty not the front end, you can hear it coming from the hump under the shifters

clack clack clack is the best way to describe it, increasing with road speed....

I kow you stated that you don't have alot of time but, I would crawl under you rig, and drain the trans and transfer case and take a look at the oil. You could have something going bad in one of them...... it never hurts to service them anyway. Also, while you're under there, take a good look at everything under the rig. Not a bad idea to drop the clutch cover on the bell housing too and look in there.

Good luck

I'll get under it when i get up, I just worked a 12 hour night shift, before I do something stupid i'm going to sleep for a bit, I'm hoping when i get up there is a list of posts to look at...

Once I'm up, i'll drain the trannies, jack up rear tires, get them spun by hand with me under the truck to see if I can see or feel anything, and go from there...

Great timing : (

good luck and keep your eyes out for something stupid..... like, maybe someone fawking with ya and putting a long ziptie on your driveshaft....:D:doh:

went out again, it's transfer case related, when i'm in 4L the sound is there, at a higher frequency, something is going bad inside the transfer case

: (

What rig is this in? Do you have the parking brake on the transfer case?
(secretly thinking that this almost sounds like maybe you tried to drive with the parking brake on, and broke the mounts?)

no spares, I have a 5 gear planned to go in, but no driveshafts for it. I have the parking brake on the case, but it is not on, it hasn't worked in ages, the cable is disconnected...if that was the case, I would have had some noise as soon as I started, I drove about 15 miles, tehn it started about 1/ 2 mile from home...

I thinkl i'm screwed for now, I need to drop the case and split it to see what's what

Wow I have what sounds to be the same problem, I took mine in they told be it was the throw out bearing... On mine the sound stops when you press in the clutch. Good luck

no if it was the throwout the sound would change with engine rpm, as you said if you push in the clutch it would go away, mine does not go away....

awww f&*(^(876\

got it apart, a fingernail size tooth broke off one gear and was picked up by another, and munch time...

5-speed here i come...

Well, so much for the easy answers....

at least it happened close to home, less than a week ago I drove 2 hours thru a hell snowstorm, leading a string of cars thru deep snow, just happy it didn't happen then...

what do you think caused it to let go, just fatigue? or were you doing something... spirited... just before?

no idea, I haven't been off road since around New Years....just a few road trips, a 2 hour run in 4 High, when it let go i was coming home from work...-20 C out, nothing spirted at all...

when i did get it split from the transmission, the output shaft was galled up bad too, I'll post pics once I get it all out...
