Chrome Delete - Wrapped or Painted? (1 Viewer)

Spent the afternoon searching Mud and there seems to be different ways of approaching the various bits of chrome

My local wrap place saying they can't wrap the rear hatch "LANDCRUISER" chrome bar

Does that wound right?
- Does anybody have a strong opinion what should be painted and what can be wrapped?

I’ve been wondering about this for months. Finally bit the bullet over the weekend and plastidipped all the chrome on the boom. I had zero experience with it so I watched a ton of YouTube videos and did a dry run on the tailgate cover first. Still pretty nerve wracking to spray directly on to the car.

Time will tell how long it holds up but so far it’s exactly what I was hoping for in a dechrome. Total cost: about $7 for the can and a new roll of painters tape. And it reallyis super easy to peel off, so if it starts to look cheap, I’ll just take it off and go for a more permanent paint.

We do a fair number of chrome deletes. Always paint and we use XPEL paint protection film over paint on the front exposed areas (grille and lower fog surrounds) in the front [just posted a video on YouTube]

You could vinyl the lower door moldings, lower fog surrounds, and window belt moldings but will not hold up as good as real automotive grade paint work. The grille and rear-area would not be a good idea in vinyl.

Their are 25 total pieces in a chrome delete.
5 pieces- rear hatch
2 pieces- v8, Toyota emblems
3 pieces- grille
4 pieces- lower fog surrounds
4 pieces- lower door moldings
6 pieces- window belt moldings

We charge $2150 + $400 for PPF on front areas. That includes removal of all pieces except window belt moldings, prep, paint (with PPG envirobase), clear coat, and reinstall.

The window belt moldings are prepped and painted on the vehicle while we wrap the entire vehicle in plastic.

To answer the main question: vinyl just isn’t as good, I’ve had problems years down the road with it.

Really happy with the outcome of the paint, including the belt molding which I compared to replacing with OEM from the earlier model 200’s!

I would consider vinyl if I knew I would want to remove or change in the future.

Holy shait that’s expensive. Do you roll that into finance of the vehicle?

All painted individual pieces as listed above, like most paintwork, it is the prep that determines the paint outcome!

Curious if you took the grill off first or just put some cardboard or something behind it.

Just used masking tape and left about an inch off to be able to peel easier around the grill

Doing a vinyl chrome delete on my 2019 next week was quoted about $1200. The guy doing it is supposedly top notch. Not too worried about longevity if it lasts a couple of years I'll be happy and do it again. I'll update when its done.

That’s interesting. I was quoted about $10 cheaper and that doesn’t include the rear chrome badge-bar (does that thing have a name?) which they say needs painting but at least it’s in the ballpark.

i am many states away from home so know nothing about the skills of the warp shop. If anybody on here is from San Antonio pls lmk...

Thanks! It's just the regular black color that they carry at hardware stores. I couldn't find any actual color name on the can.

On my 2020 i decided to wrap and chrome delete:

The back hatch is dipped as the shop said they couldn’t wrap the lettering. I think it worked well as it’s hard to tell where the satin wrap ends and the dip begins.

The grill is a problem. Nothing appears to stick to the chrome inserts, neither dip nor wrap. Toyota claims they have a new finish but not sure if that’s true. The only solution seems to be sanding and painting...

The truck looks silly with the stock rims and tyres (a friend said it looked like “The Rock wearing Birkenstock's”. I have to drive from San Antonio to Vancouver over the next few weeks so thought i would wait for the Methods and Nittos.

Find a good local paint shop. I've had great luck with a shop the next town over that is willing to take on my oddballl projects at their (very reasonable) hourly rate.

I've also hacked together my own chrome delete at various times with plastidip, SEM trim black, and even smoke modeling paint (on an 80 series).

I don't need to deal with customer expectations and warranty work like Eric does though...

Wish I had seen this sooner. Someone on this board deleted rear chrome on their gold 200 with a gunmetal color vinyl wrap and it looked fantastic. They did it at home. Maybe it wouldn’t be up to a shop’s standards but it sure seemed to work. Not sure how to find those posts for you..

What kind of problems? The vinyl starts peeling or does it damage the surfaces under it?

Ok, I admit I am an idiot. I can’t tell from the above threads if Eric is talking to me...

on the off chance that he is: the 2020 has these thin chrome inserts top and bottom of each gunmetal grille bar: neither wrap nor dip will stick, you can literally blow the dried dip off... the wrap shop (who I will describe as good but not great) said that even leaving them wrapped under a heatlamp didn’t help.

the Toyota dealer I spoke to claimed the 2020 grill has some special non-stick finish.

I had told the wrap shop I wanted everything reversible but these grill pieces seem easy to replace in the future. Hopefully there will be a black aftermarket replacement grill for 2020 at some point that also acknowledges the front sensor package behind the grill.

As an aside for anybody who wraps or does a chrome delete: the wrap shop forgot to plug in the “badge”which includes the front camera and radar sensor and oddly disables the headlights. Lots of codes thrown which needed 45mins to clear...

Just out of curiosity, anyone ever consider Cerakote for their chrome pieces? The thought had occurred to me as you'd have to strip off all of the trim and get them painted anyways. From what I've read about cerakoting, it will last a lot longer and be more durable than typical automotive paint.
