Maybe you should pick up a cheap Chinese HT.
Or maybe we can make a concerted effort not to support the Chinese.

I'm hoping of joining you all, hoping my wife and dog will come along.
Any idea on the how extreme the trail will be? If too extreme, I might come alone and take up primer7's offer to ride shotgun (if still available).
Looking forward to playing with my new HT. APRS is cool.
I'm assuming we should bring a brown bag lunch...
Maybe you should pick up a cheap Chinese HT. An HT would be good to have for spotting and such later.
How much new snow is that area projected to receive in the next 48 hrs?
I have been toying with the idea of heading over (I need to pick up my new CA illegal heater over @ Spressos) but with prevailing conditions it might be a lot for one day with the fam with a Snow Run and going over the Sierra .

So we should buy stuff that is made in China and sold by companies based in Japan, at a marked up price?Or maybe we can make a concerted effort not to support the Chinese.

You really can't go to far wrong if all you want is a simplex unit for rig to rig on the trail and spotting. The best advice I have is get the simplest one you can find, to many features suck when the the key pad is smaller than your phone. In general less features=lower price. That's not a bad idea, considering you are much better educated on them, which one would you recommend? I need it to be a simple radio for a simple guy.

The "don't buy Chinese stuff" boat sailed a long time ago.

I wasn't trying to start something. Each to their own.
Like Dan said, have fun everybody. Cut a nice tree.
