Just got alternator replaced last month
Just replaced battery, wheel bearings, and rear rotors. First time driving since

Drove locally just fine. Once I hit the highway I got ABS, 4Lo, BRAKE, diff lock, and the dash read “check VSC”

Speedo stopped entirely

I tried putting in neutral and switching to 4Lo but now it seems to be stuck in limp mode / 4Lo.

Pulled code p0500

I have a rachet set and some basic tools with me. Chat gpt suggested an unplugged sensor.

Can anyone here help? It’s parked now. I’ll be working for the next 1-2hrs then I’ll be stranded.

Oh and it lost a lot of diff fluid during bearing install but mechanic topped it off.

do you have a code reader? or can you go get one? If you can pull the codes that should point to what's going on... and if you can clear the codes, that could get you going again.
Yes p0500. Forgot to mention. These happen at the worst times.

Id check all the abs sensors as these could all be damaged or accidentally unplugged replacing wheel bearings. Do you know which bearings were replaced? Did you do the work, or did you have someone do it?

P0500 is vehicle speed sensor, so any of the 4 wheel speed sensors being damaged or unplugged could cause the issues you see.

Had someone do all 4 for me. Ok that’s checkable. Chat said the front 2 wheels likely the culprit. Maybe I can check them w the voltmeter

I think it'll be even more evident than a voltmeter reading. Look for broken/damaged wires, and make sure the sensors were put back in place. If you don't see anything, pull the sensor out and make sure it wasn't damaged when replacing the bearings. I think it's one 10mm bolt each to pull them out

Sensors are all plugged in. Going to pull each one and inspect.

Also stuck in 4Lo.

Were you in 4lo when the errors happened? If not it's highly unlikely that you're stuck in 4lo, that's just one ornament on the Christmas tree of lights that accompany any check engine code. The limp mode cuts power substantially and may make it feel like you're in 4Lo

Head to an Autozone and have them reset the OBD codes. If you aren't near an auto parts store, try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset. That could get you going. For a while...

Got out of 4Lo by whacking the actuator with a ratchet. Win! At least now I’m mobile

I foolishly flipped into lo to try and solve the problem. I’m back now into hi

I reset my own code with my scanner. Did not help. I think one of the sensors are done. I’ll go get a new one and hope it does the trick. Google maps can tell me my speed for the drive there.

Sensors are available near me at autozone and Napa. How can I confirm before I buy it? One sensor wire has a ton of play by the module. Is that enough?

Volt reading 10.5 to the harness on the pass side. 8.5 on the drivers side.

Glad you made it, even if slowly. That loose wire is super likely the culprit. Start with that one and I bet you'll be ok.

Update. Bit the bullet and took it into Toyota for a diag. They were reading life from all 4 sensors. They reset the codes w tech stream and it had no issues. They took it for a drive in the highway and couldn’t reproduce it. They said they read the code p0500 from all 4 sensors which is weird, but that they don’t think it’ll come back.

I figured maybe one got wet, but they said that would short 1, not 4. Anyway they didn’t charge me for the visit which was kind.

I got a car wash right after to be sure it wasn’t a water issue.

All good for now. Fingers crossed.

Keeping this thread up to date in case someone else has the same issue. Search of p0500 in this section doesn’t yield much.

Update 2.

Went to get an alignment. My toe was poor after installing thee rock warriors and Michelins. After it was aligned the lights came back. The garage had tech stream and said it looks like the transmission speed sensor is the one giving the issue.

Didn’t sound right to me. He probably found the issue inadvertently elsewhere on the front end. But I went to the tranny specialist. He said makes no sense the transmission is fine.

Hasn’t come back yet. I may let the original guy who put the bearings in check it out. I feel that he causes more problems then solutions but at least he owns his mistakes & will pay for the remedies.
