Wondering if anyone has ever attempted to mate a gm 6.2 or 6.5 diesel to a toyota w56 or r150/151 5 speed tranny with using the advance adapter 4.3/v8 bellhousing?

I called AA and they were little to no help, about all they said is the diesel starter won't work because of the nose cone. My reply was how about a mini starter and the guy said... "that probably would work, I didn't think of that"... Good tech support.

I asked about their special flywheel and the guy said it is a chevy stock flywheel.

If you are wondering why this combo, its because I have access to all of the parts for nothing, for a "project" rig. I also do not want an automatic 700r4.

I am not even sure if the 5 speed would hold up to the torque of the diesel, but a NV4500 could always be swapped in down the road. If I could I would go with the NV4500 right off the bat, but lack of funds and finding one is an issue as of right now.

Thanks

The 6.2/6.5 needs a balanced flywheel or torque converter for that engine only. You can't use a different one. The diesel starter is also unique to that motor. It's tough for that starter to turn over that motor. A gas starter isn't going to do it. It has to have a good brace as well. I've busted 4 grade 8 bolts off already. If you want a 4 speed, use a SM465. Otherwise use a TH400 or TH700R4.

IMHO it's way too heavy for a mini truck anyway.

You can't use a starter that has a "nosecone" to support the drive gear with the AA adapter. I don't think that there is one for a 6.2 that does not have this design.

You have to use the 153 tooth flywheel and 10.5 inch clutch with the AA adpater. Won't work behind the 6.2.

AFAIK, this swap is a non-starter. :(

Not to mention that this engine is awful heavy for a mini. I've done the 4.3 swap and the small block swap into minis. I don't think that a 6.2 is a good idea for this rig. Now into a Cruiser... That's another story. ;)

Thanks for the replies

The engine is going into a fj-40, not a mini, should of made that clear.

153 tooth flywheel from AA or is it a 158 tooth?

As far as starters, can you use a mini type without the nosecone?

I've always called the small chevy flywheel a 153. 153, 158, whichever. It won't work with a 6.2 and the 6.2 starter.
When you say mini starter, what do you mean? If you mean a starter from a mini truck, hell no. If you mean a gaer reduction starter... Never seen one for a 6.2.

An R150/R151, G54, W58 or any other Toyota minitruck 5 speed will be too long in an FJ40.

You gotta run the diesel flywheel. I think it is the larger tooth count ring gear.

I tried running the AA adapter to a cruiser 4 speed and ate two clutches in 200 miles. I modified the adapter to accept the nosecone of the diesel starter, but it wasn't pretty. Basically, I just clearanced it. I think the SM465 might be the ticket, although an overdrive would sure be nice in mine. The van I sourced the engine and trans had a 14 bolt I scrounged too. I looked up the gear code and was shocked to see one in the low 2.'s. WTF, sez I, until I put it in the 60 with 3.80s. It's hummin at 55 mph. :D
