check tranny fluid while engine is running? (1 Viewer)

My atf is at the right level if I check it while running. 1 qt over when turned off. Which way is right?

Level surface, engine running, transmission in park, operating temperature.

I couldn't friggin tell! It was all over the stick when i pulled it out while running. But when it's cold it's at the correct level.
