So i went away fitting up a set of 17" rims onto the 40 on the weekend...but i made the mistake of starting on the rear wheels....

the black rims look pretty good, but the center of the rim isnt large enough to fit over the front hub...:(......BUT..

80series rims fit perfectly..just need some 1.5" spacers and im off to the races with a little wider more stable footprint!!

WOO HOO
stuff 150.webp

Seriously? You don't think those look like butt?

The 80 series rims look fine, and being a bit wider sounds like a good deal for you. Added bonus (over the black ones): if you swap in a FF axle in the back, the wheels will work there too.

i like the 80 series wheels much more!

here its mine with 17 FJ rims painted in grey with 34x10.50 LTB.1.5'' spacers..

what size of lift do you have on that rad blue truck!!! i wanna see more pics... NICE

I'm surprised how much I like the 80 rims on your 40. Please post more pics when you get them all mounted.

You may find that you need longer rear studs with the spacers. Good luck

just an update with 80series wheels and 33x12.5 BFG's mounted up..

yep...1.25" spacers on all 4 corners

Did you need longer rear studs to use with the spacers?

Looks good

Looks good! I'm having a bugger of a time finding some stock chrome or white steelies to go on my '81 fj40. Maybe I will go this route .... :hhmm:

i didnt have to use longer studs.. the stock studs worked great. Wheel spacers were from TrailGear

fj80 rims on a fj40 question

Hey Hill, looks like you and I were thinking along the exact same lines but you beat me to it. I currently have 16" steel rock crawler rims with 36" radial Irocks on it. I really don't like the look. I only have a 4" lift and don't want to go any higher. The 36" Iroks rub and really don't fit with only a 4" lift. I was researching those same exact rims for my 40 when I ran across your thread. My 40 is a 73 also and I wanted to know if you were running disk brakes on the front and rear. I want to go with those same rims but was worried about clearance issues with the disc brakes. Looks like I will be selling my 5 tires and rims if this works out. I like how your 40 sits on those rims. Post more pics!!!!

ill get up some more pics in the next week or two.... i do have disc brakes on the front. and the 1.25" wheel spacers help acheive a good fit.
