My check engine light came on today on my 1995 FZJ80. Is there any way to read the codes, or is it only diagnoseable with a handheld tester?

Thanks
Scott

Great, I didn't know that.

Thanks

FYI that scanner at autozone occassionally goes on sale for $99 down from like $169 normally. It reads and erases codes but as far as I know, it wont do any realtime performance stuff like the pro scanners will. Very useful tool, BTW, at sears there is a separate plastic tool pouch hardshell thing for like 2 dollars that holds the scanner perfectly, I never drive without the scanner and case. HTH

P.S. I'll bet a  that you pull a 401. Not too hard to fix, eventually...

Once you get the code pulled, run a search using that code as the keyword (i.e. P0401). If you have any questions about it, post them up.

the 401 is exactly the one. I was going to start on the vacuum lines and make sure there is no vacuum leaks, and then go from there. Is there a common item that goes out in the system? I am very familiar with the 40 series EGR system, so I have some idea of where to start. I also have the FSM to guide the troubleshooting.

Thanks for all of the help

Portal - conquered this last week doing two things:
1. Replaced the EGR modulator
2. the hoses off the EGR valve and modulator - checked each one for carbon blockage. There is a hose going from the modulator to the EGR valve and into the intake manifold. It looks like a long hose but is actually split; the second half to the intake on mine was clogged. So not sure which thing I did corrected the code but it is gone. Nelson

Nelson, this is apparently excellent advice for your specific rig and your rig's specific problem but one thing myself and several other fine folks here have learned is that the EGR system is super sensitive, perhaps overly sensitive, and as such sometimes we fix several things and then pull several more codes until the last thing we fix is the right thing to fix!!! In my case, first I replaced the modulator which worked for some short while, then I replaced some hoses which worked for another short while, then finally two codes later I replaced the VSV and that did it. For portal I would recommend testing each component per FSM (except for the EGR valve tests, those are somewhat silly; just apply vacuum to the EGR valve at idle and if it runs rough it is probably fine, or at least fine enough to start looking at the modulator or the vsv). Anyway, this problem has humbled me several times so I hesitate to even act like I understand why the system is so finnicky but one thing I'm sure of is that you can replace a lot of parts but until you replace the specific thing that is pulling the code, you are wasting time and money. HTH.

turbo - after reading the FAQ's I took a chance and got lucky. Hopefully it last for a year or two or three. Nelson
