Check Engine Light???

Hi guys;

The Check engine light of my 62 turns on some times when I drive it, I ask some mechanics in town, but the guys doesn't have the computer to check older cars!!!

so... how can I check the issue manualy?

also, yesterday I was calculating the mi/gal...... 7.75 mi/gl!!! . The last time was 9.5 .

Check engine lights are usually emissions related failures. If the shop you go to cannot check an older Toyota, then they have only got a basic OBDII code reader - try another shop. Most any quality scan tool is backwards compatible for the Toy adapters and codes.

As for bad fuel economy - tune it up with quality parts as a first step. Then check your O2 sensors etc. with a lab scope or data streaming scan tool.

There is no such thing as a scan tool for that truck. Well, maybe the dealer had something, but I doubt they still have it. You check the internal code with a paperclip. It's very easy, too easy actually, I wish newer cars had the same capability.

Join the 3FE list on Yahoo, buy a FSM (Factory Service Manual), and you will learn more than you ever thought possible about your truck. Lots of free advice, they will be happy to help you with your fuel mileage issue too. That's not an acceptable mileage, it should do much better than that, although 13-14 mpg is about tops. It may very well be that one of your 2 O2 sensors has failed, which will cause the CEL to turn on, and bad gas mileage.

My CEL came on this morning when I was driving from Tacoma to Seattle on the freeway, average speed between 50 and 60mph (that's an 89 62 for you).

Is there a good thread about how to check one's codes with a paperclip? I haven't been able to find one, but I've gathered from the other threads that a sudden CEL is likely O2 sensor related.

Possibly related -- sometimes, like this morning, the needles in the engine temp and fuel gauges go crazy at the same time. Highway grades will do it, but sometimes it just does it when I'm driving flat. And also when the shoddy A/C is on. The temp gauge redlines and so does the fuel gauge, but they always do it together, so it makes me feel like it's not an actual super hot engine.

{You re right to doubt the gauges, this is common to our cruisers and is due to those gauges sharing a common ground, if I remember. There are also threads detailing the cause and cure, as well.}

You are correct to doubt the gauges, they share a common ground as I remember, and this is a known thing with the 60's. There are threads detailing the cause and fix.
Check the 60 series FAQ on how to read the codes.

As far as the CEL coming on while driving, O2 sensor is common, but so is an EGR system malfunction.

EGR System? It's true, I don't know what that is. Or maybe it's late on a Thursday and my brain is toast.
