Back in November the Check Engine light and the VSC Trac and VSC Off lights came on. I read as much as I could and took it to my mechanic. He checked the codes and did the work I’m attaching to this post. It has come back on at least 5 or 6 times since. It may go several weeks or even a month (in fairness didn’t drive as much during quarantine). He looks for the problem, resets the code, and then it reappears some time later.

my mechanic has worked on this nearly every time and says he has no idea why it’s coming on now. It is showing a code of 1442 he tells me. Does anyone have any advice. I’ve spent a small fortune and want these lights to go off. I welcome ideas or suggestions. I want to fix it and do it right, but am afraid my mechanic doesn’t know what else to do.

There’s 2 pumps and 2 valves, one for each bank. He has what looks like 3 valves and one pump so I’m confused as to what he actually replaced. He really needs a techstream verify what he replaced it actually working correctly. Sometimes the relay goes bad on these too, rare but it does happen.

I appreciate the help. I’ve never heard of tech stream. Part of this whole adventure between my LX450 and LX470 has taught me a lot. It seems it’s not that expensive to buy. Is this something I could purchase to learn from? I can work with him on what it’s reading out. I want to verify he has done what’s needed, I do trust him, so I don’t think he’s intentionally done something or not tried. Every time I’ve taken it back he hasn’t charged me, so I think he’s honest. Just works on BMW’s more so than Toyota’s.

I worked at a toyota dealership so we already had the software for it but I know you need a laptop, the software and the cable to connect to the OBDII connector. I’m sure If you search on mud, someone has all the info you need to do it. I’m guessing he used OEM parts? Could be something like he got a faulty part or didn’t put something back together correctly, hard to tell without looking at it or knowing exactly what did or didn’t do. I know most people loathe going to a dealership but in this case, it might not hurt to.

There are also bypass kits... they omit the hard parts and trick the ecm into thinking everything is ok. I have no personal experience, but ran across multiple threads when researching the purchase of our ‘06... seems to be common in the tundra realm...

4runnerclub.com is a dead website . whats techstream ?
Techstream is the software that allows you to connect to the ECU and do dealer level service. It's way beyond just resetting some minor codes. Search on Techstream or TIS and read up on how to get it setup and running on a laptop. There are knockoff cables for sell on eBay too, so you can usually buy one of these and get an old cracked version of TIS running. Since your truck is old, the latest and greatest version of TIS shouldn't be needed.

Ty will do

Sometimes i wish i have a 4x4 C10 , 350 FI small block with a Muncie 4 speed
Easy to work on and cant kill it , lol
True, these more complicated rigs require different skills. But I do love my rig, it's a pretty amazing bit of kit. But what are you trying to actually resolve? TIS may not be needed.

i have the same problem as above . my vsc , abs and check engine light came on . the engine went into limp mode , 45mph at 3500 rpm was Max , unk gear. i pulled over , removed neg cable from battery , 5 min , reset the ECU , lights and limp mode went away. I did overfill my rig the night before temp went to 28F. drive for 10 minutes . so i thought gas cap evap canister etc. 450 miles later same thing happened.

06 LX470 , 203 k miles . i like my j100 a lot as well, perfect size . i think 4runners too small , 2nd gen Sequioa too big .

i bought a blue tooth code / torque app reader so i will have codes next time this happens .

im a mild prepper and used to be an a/c mechanic in the Army . So i will prob get Techstream , obd2 cables , laptop etc
so i can fix my rig anywhere .

will update ya all with codes next time

Yeah, once the CEL comes on the VSC and ATRAC lights come on too. I just get the P0420/P0430 codes for the cats and it triggers the CEL and the rest of the lights always follow. I have the bootleg TIS using the eBay cable and it's good to have. It lets you see and do things deeper in the ECU, like checking the AHC pressures. I know I need to increase my torsion bars and have some 35mm spacers to install on the rear springs. This should get my pressures down near optimum again.

good info above , Ty. will check for those Cat codes. Did you relplace your CATs or get the ebay CAT extensions ?

My AHC has been disconnected , btw . so idk my AHC pressures .... or if that even triggers my CEL, VSC ,ABS. Will update ...

I didn't replace them, I just have an old Android phone running in the truck that connects to the bluetooth ODB2 reader all the time, and it automatically resets the CEL when it pops up. It's been running like this for a few years now. I also use it to monitor engine temp, trans temp, has a compass, elevation, etc. The cat codes are just nags anyway, it doesn't effect engine performance and my state doesn't perform smog checks. And in truth, I've found it only throws the code on certain occasions, which usually is when the cats haven't' had time to get hot.
