Cheap Cruise Control Fix???

For those of you that have done the 'cheap' cruise control fix - moving the actuator back and forth a few times - and actually had it 'fix' the problem - how long has it lasted???? :confused:

I've done it a couple of times and each time the cruise control will work again. I don't use it often at all, but headed over to Needles next weekend for some canoeing with my scouts and wanted to make sure the cruise worked this time. I-40 is a long boring haul south of Barstow. Checked cruise control out last night and no worky again! :censor: Haven't popped the hood to do the 'fix' again yet.

Just curious of any others experience.
 
i actually was going to attempt the fix since my cruise was not working. Went wheeling before. I guess one of the hard jolts fixed it because now it works fine.
 
Not really adressing your question but I haven't had time to address mine (even though it sounds like a quick fix). Mine goes out once in awhile. I'm thinking rather than just move it back and forth to clear the contact I'm going to attack it with some type of electrical solvent. Anyone have a suggestion on plastic friendly solvents?
 
It depends on the individual actuator. Mine konks out about once a month or so and I give it the old whip job :D I have a nice used actuator in the garage but I haven't got around to installing it. In stock form the job is easy but my water injection pump is piggy-backed to the actuator which makes changing it out a half day job....:mad:
 
Ok - now two things to do this weekend. Whip the actuator to get it working for next weekend and test speedo with GPS (see Larger Tire thread). Think it's time to change the oil as well and use up one of those precious 20004 filters.
 
just to hijack for a moment.......i have used the 20004 filters i got from cdan and actually have noticed more of a start-up rattle than with the NAPA filter. Still using same M1 oil.....i dunno.
 
We'll see. I remember that start-up rattle from years ago. It's been a long time since I've had it. Yota, I presume uses the cheaper 'large' filter doing their normal maintenance. Interesting experiment of one sample to come.
 
hmm use mine daily on my 35 mile commute to work, never a problem (only 9 months track record) maybe its a use it or loose it kind of thing?

That could very well be. Stop and go freeway traffic in Greater LA area doesn't allow for cruise control usage very often.

I just know that last three hours of this trip next weekend is all wide open freeway, no cars, hopefully no CHP, speed limit in rural CA is 70, so hope to be doing 75-80. That speed is about all I'm comfortable with in the Cruiser full of scouts. Much easier drive with cruise control! :D Maybe the guy biatching about the Lexus on the cover of TT would think I'm a :princess: for even using or having cruise control. hehehe :flipoff2:

Your Yota dealer won't likely use the nice large filter, but the cheap piece of crap smaller filter (YZZB..?). Those big filters are pricey compared to the new small crapola ones....

Doug - changed the oil Sat. It was the Yzzb........filter on there.

Bitch to get to that filter. I've got a cheap oil filter remover with the three prongs and the damn thing would not grab the filter without slipping alot. Finally got old filter off with a little cussing. Could not get the new filter anything past hand tight.

Any suggestions? The three prongs are threaded steel at the ends, no rubber, friction tape or anything. How is metal to metal supposed to grab? Not to steal my own thread or anything. BTW - no start up rattle with 20004 filter thru the rest of the weekend or this morning. Another thing, dealer did not use oil drain plug gasket on last oil change either!

Hand tight for my manly hands is waaaaay too tight. Follow the instructions on the filter package. First, tighten until the gasket touches. Since you are new to this, you will want to thread it on and off a few times until you get the "feel" on when the gasket first makes contact. Then 1/2" turn (or whatever the package says.... )

the one that has worked best for me is the socket thing, they are notorious for slipping but I found one that fits the Denso filters prefectly and no problems with slippage Advanced Auto "AmPro" # T70404, 73MM 14 flutes
 
RavenTai - thx for the link. Good reading. I'm probably ok with how tight I got it handtight. Interestingly, the 20004 package says hand tight then 3/4 turn with a SST (looks like the 3 claw filter wrench).
 
I believe it says until the gasket touches, *then* 3/4 turn. You don't need the SST for that 3/4 turn.

Exactly what's different about the refered to SST and other filter wrenchs???

B - I'll take a look at the package when I get home this evening. I've still got two of the coveted 20004's. Funny thing is that for the price of the oil and filter, the dealer will do it for about the same cost.

Chris - hello??????? Have you been away for awhile? Yes. Dan warned us about it months ago.

BTW - found my own answer to what SST stands for - Special Service Tool - item looks like a cap specifically designed to fit on the end of a Yota filter. Do you sell Dan?
 
Just an FYI for the original thread question. Mine for about a month or so...I don't use the CC much but noticed something interesting. It worked great for several (4) days in a row (wasn't my normal drive) and then went to use it the 5th day...nada. Of course I didn't take the 2 min. to "fix" it yet.

I am interested on MoJ's idea and question...of using an electrical solvent? Anyone? Would it provide any long term help? Or is the once a while not bad enough to mess with. The problem for me seems to be, I don't think about it until I am into a 30+ mile trip when it won't work! DOH!
