I've been putting off this work for awhile now, but was recently re-engaged with my Cruiser from reading the ih8mud forums. ANyway, The Cruiser is a 79 BJ 40 canadian model with a manual glow plug over-ride switch on the dash (factory). I had a problem with the glow plug relay last summer and was advised to replace it, which I did. THen found that my glow plugs were some what suspect, so replaced them as well. It seems now that when I turn the key to the run position, the glow screen gets nice and orange, turn to start, truck fires right up, glow screen stays lit for say 10-20 seconds while the truck is running (key is back in run position). Relay will then start 'chattering' sporadically. The glow screen then either dies out or stays 'lit'. I'm worried I may fry either the relay or the plugs, and given there replacement value I would rather not. The dash switch seems to do it's thing, ie. hold it down the glow screen stays lit, release, and it screen dies out, so I have ruled out that it is sticking (one idea).

As and aside, if anyone has a electrical wiring diagram for a 79 BJ 40 I would love to either get a copy, or link or something as it sucks trying to diagnose electrical with out a diagram, especially when the PO has done some "work".

Still very new to Cruisers and working in an unknown territory so any experience out there will be appreciated. THanks to those who have posted suggestions in the past...and those who will hopefully post to this.

With the manual system, your glow should not be continuing at all once you move the key to the run position. If the resistor is still red, then somthing is sticking on, and maintaining the glow. Try glowing with the switch on the dash next time, and do not use the key postion glow. Also have someone glow it while you have a volt meter on the busbar, and see what the voltage is and how long it maintains after you move the key to run.

Where is the chattering coming from? Glovebox area? If so, I suggest it is your fuel control relay that is chattering. Does the chattering go away if you bump the idle up a little (more oil pressure)? Check all your grounds...battery to frame, firewall to frame, engine to frame, and also open up the fuel control relay (if it is the one chattering) and see if it has moisture in it.

Do a search on "Fuel control relay" for lots of info.

i always used the glow button on the older rigs (probably because i never knew you could turn the key backwards and ignite the system) and never had a problem... sounds like it might be something in the key switch itself sticking
