I have an FJ62 that needs the transmission filter changed. Is it simple enough for an inexperienced person, like me, to change?
It doesn't seem that difficult.

Its not hard, don't over torque the pan bolts when you put it back on. You will probably be able to clean and reuse your filter. Search transmission flush, or rodney flush for the more info.

He he. I'm remembering the mess I made as a newb owner with transmission problems. If you can, lift it up to give you some room to work. Throw down some cardboard too. Keep some rags handy too and keep a couple of cups handy to hold and separate the bolts.

It took me a couple of hours to knock it out and I had never done it before. The lack of space was what made it tough for me. It wasn't that bad of a job though. You can do it.

the only way to learn is read up on it and dive right in....of course pick a day when you don't have a deadline to get it done. Give yourself a saturday afternoon so that if you don't get it done for some reason you can stop refocus on mud and complete it sunday morning.

There's one gasket for the filter and one for the pan, so be sure to line those up first. The metal filter runs about $100 and probably doesn't need to be replaced. Tranny takes between 6 and 7qts. of fluid. I just had my HS auto shop do the job for me. :) Having a lift and a waste disposal system sure helps with this messy job.

Just did this today. The filter is nowhere near $100. Paid $21 from NAPA for mine. Tranny takes 5.5L to fill IF you only drained it, but there's another 8L in there retaining junk.
Do yourself a favor and get a new filter and do a complete flush.

13.5 liters of fluid total? Toyota quoted me 100 bucks. We cleaned up filter before reinstalling.

Pan gasket and filter from napa? I need to do pasive flush on mines. its rumbling a little bit in the lower gears.

Yep, Napa was the way to go. Had exactly the right filter and gaskets. Also a good time to change over to synthetic ATF after a couple of good flushings.

Gracias
