Change your gas cap every 100k miles or 7 years

The OCD among us would love to see a link to a OEm hubcap. Replacing it is no big deal, IMO.

I'm with the OP on this one. I have had codes thrown on both my 97 and my 99 from worn out gas caps. The 99 had less than 100k on it but spent most of it's life in the dry desert southwest. If a scan gauge is hooked up, pretty easy to clear, but if not, can cause concern until buying a code reader or paying a dealership $50-$100 to tell you whether or not the cel is serious. Changing a gas cap on a schedule is not a bad idea.

what you don't want to do is to get caught in the middle of a smog test and be told your cap is bad and you have to either come back some other day for a new test and pay a new $50 fee - or buy what must evidently be a solid gold cap on the premises in order to pass the test... All that while knowing it would have cost $10 to buy a new one at the local parts store...

I just ordered on on line

Just received and replaced gas caps on my 100 as well as my '01 LS430.

Old and new pictured below:

Interestingly (to me at least), the cap on the left which seemed to be causing a CEL on my 100 didn't do the same on the LS. There was a small hint of fuel vapor smell on the LS that wasn't there before, but no CEL. Same the other way around. The LS cap which looked better (see pic above) seemed to have solved the CEL on the 100.

Either way, both got replaced with new and for now, problem solved! Knocking on wood.

just got my new one today

All for a good PM but can someone explain how a gas cap seal can result in a better idle? Would think there would be a CEL from EVAP preasure way before there was a vacuum leak big enough to cause a stumble?

Does anyone know if the OEM gas cap from a 2001 will fit on a 1998? I want to have the tether on there.

I wonder if this is a climate related wear item. My 100 has always been in a cold climate and the gas cap lasted me 16 years and 331k with no issue. We have our rust, you have your dried out gas caps. Wanna trade?

Nope.....I'll just replace the gas cap every ten years. ;)

I'm guessing the heater hose T's suffer more here too. Likewise, I'll just replace them every ten years and "deal" with my rust free truck.
