Just to share my enthusiasm .. last weekend I found a Stihl 034 locally that had only "less than 3 hours on it" (sure it did I'm thinking) and paid $300 cause I figured it started ok and idled fine (looked surpringly clean as well - although the chain sagged about 3/4 inch from the bottom of the bar) ... anyway .. after pulling the various bits off - it was pretty clear it really hadn't been used very much! Chain sag was result of a new chain that had never been adjusted. Pretty happy with this machine .. and the way it cuts! Looks like my 026 will need an overhaul (preceded by a proper chain sharpening) - I had no idea how a Stihl should be cutting. I was beginning to think that Stihl could learn a thing or two from Echo ... apparently not!

No manual for the 034 but I expect I will find one on-line --- trying to ensure it stays in reasonable shape ... and I don't screw it up.

Still need to get a Kombi with Scythe ... and now a leafblower :) (also think that a good used Stihl in the 75cc range would be pretty handy around here)

I will see if I can find you a cylinder to put on the 266.

That would be great! I've gone from 3 working saws to one piece of junk this year and hate to be without a quality saw. Your the man.

You should be able to download an 034 owners manual for free at www.STIHLUSA.com

Get the (Kombi Motor) KM 130 and the BG Blower Attachment. You will be amazed at the power it has blowing leaves and debris.

..Thanks! Unfortunatley no joy on the 034 manual BUT there is an 036 that can be downloaded and I think they are pretty similar.

I am pretty enthusiastic about the Kombi system - unfortunately no "hands-on" experience (yet) ... I have looked at all the other mfrs similar systems but none seem to have the lineup of attachments of the Stihl .. that do exactly what I need!

I will have one...sooner rather than later.

Thanks again!

If you want a printed version, I can see if I can dig one up for ya.
...THANKS ... I can download the electronic version and print a copy at work.. I really appreciate the offer though ... and will save up your generosity for a time I am really desperate.
THANKS AGAIN!!!

Dan,
Looks like that Cylinder I had lined up has fallen through. I did the buy it now thing on ebay and for some reason it bounced and it got sold to another buy later that night. If you come accross a 266 cylinder let me know. Thanks,

Why is it that my husky rancher totally sucks balls? Hardly ever started even when new and now after having it 2 yrs it's a frickin paperweight.

Depends on what model you have.....but most husky ranchers will respond favorably to a "muffler mod" and readjustment of the carb (fuel/air ratio).

Go here and search "muffler mod rancher":

Dan, as I search ebay and Craigslist, I'm wondering if there's any practical difference between a 260 PRO and an 026? Was there a PRO model in the 026 saws? Besides decompression levers, any other difference between teh pro and non pro designated Stihls? Do you think parts obsolescence will be an issue with the 026 over the next few years?

Got back from the saw shop yesterday (85 mile round trip),and they sent me home with the wrong depth guage (stamped 0.8, guessing it's a .031 for a .404 chain?).. I will never need to use a chain this size, anyone need a freebie, before I get around to taking it back?

I also bought some RSC3 chain to try out, does the .026 tool have a wider groove to fit the added width of the humped guide?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the good info on chainsaws as well. I love my Stihls. My first one was a bruiser from god knows when. I think it was a 08S model? Probably from the 60's. Then I got an 028AV Super made in Germany which I still have . Nice saw. I've also owned two 026's(traded off). I bought a used 009 years ago with lots of miles and I used it quite a bit as well. I really liked this model but it's pretty worn out now. What's the feasibility of rebuilding it and if so best place for parts. I also bought an 038AV Super this summer for 50$ but haven't gotten around to running it yet.

Thanks

The 009 L is NLA in the USA but there are some dealers who still have them new and on the shelf for sale. It would be cheaper to buy a new one than completely rebuild one.

The 08S (1108 platform) came out in the late 1960's and was NLA in the USA in 1996. The saw is still made in Brazil but not imported into the USA. Great Saw!
