My stock console died a long time ago and I replaced it with a 50 cal. ammo can. This has worked fairly well for general storage but I still had loose stuff rattling around on the center hump. Installation of the ammo can was as simple as drilling 4 holes in the bottom and bolting it down. I placed it more toward the passenger seat to clear the parking brake.
I had some plywood lying around and threw together the rest of the console. The thick material is 3/4" thick and the underlying base is ca. 1/4" and is sandwiched between the stock console mounts and the ammo can. A couple of cup holders mounted on the sides round it out.
